How can I keep horse tail up and out of the mud

I just lop my lots tails of just above the mud klinkers that does sometimes mean a bit short, but they always grow back

I like to use little hair elastics, as opposed to regular sized ones or rubber/silicone plaiting bands:

If not using a tailbag (I like these personally: https://www.tailgator.co.uk/tailbagordering.html), I plait and then fold the end up and band that in place.

Otherwise, when clean, I oiled it or used mane and tail so mud tended to drop off, although the tick stuff was a terror.

Yes, I wash it then do a final rinse in hot water, squeeze out, and then literally rub baby oil through the whole thing, then brush. I know that's supposed to make hair brittle but it lasts ages and the mud slides out. Even on clay mud I only had to do it every few weeks.

Tail gator tail bag. Really hard wearing.

I think someone rinsed me online for always having my horses tails in a bag but it’s just easier. They are plaited and pig oiled and kept clean, I don’t have to brush them out or wash regularly. Works for me.

Plait, fold up making sure you are not on the tailbone then fasten up with electrical tape.
