How can I keep the mud off?

Hi there, my horse just loves a good roll, but doesn't love me having to scrub it from her ears and head afterwards. Has anyone tried rubbing any products into the fur/skin/mane that helps to stop the mud from sticking or makes it easier to get off? I want to make it as painless as possible for her.

Thank you :)

I'm obsessed with 7 day mud away but not sure you could put it inside ears - though I suppose you could spray it on your fingers, then rub it inside her ears and then spray it on the outside. Its been INSANE for my really really really hairy cob. xxxx

you could fork out for a snuggy hood which is what i've had to do, or you could try spraying mane and tail if she'll let you, the silacon stops the mud from sticking so bad. BUT take care not to spray it near her eyes, if poss spray on a sponge or cloth and wipe on. It's not full proof and will come off with rain/extensive mud.

errrr horses and mud go together??????

However I think what you mean is getting the mud off without him making too much of a fuss lol
My mare is a sensitive soul when it comes to grooming so I find a pimpled glove and my hand works.

welcome to the forum.

Seven Day Mud Away is great stuff, but can be a bit greasy if they're fine coated. Showshine is good too, coats the hairs so the mud is easier to remove but isn't as greasy as SDMA.

Thanks for the welcome! Yeah I know, mud and her go VERY well together. It's more about making it ok for her when I try to get it off ... I believe she's doing headstands in it at the moment :)

Im going to give seven day mud away a go, thanks very much.

My lad wants to be re-incarnated as a hippo. He thinks if he practices enough he'll finally get his wish!

Snuggy hoods. Several of them (you have to wash it most nights!).

LOL someone asked me the other day if my beast was a horse or a hippo :p

My horse gets too hot in a snuggy hood in all but the coldest weather, so I'm going to get some of that 7 day stuff which I'd never heard of.

just a work of warning if you use 7-day mud away, I know it's common sense but make sure you do a patch test first. My friend tried using this on her native pony, and he came up in huge welts all over his back end. Quite a lot of the NETTEX stuff is really chemically based.
Personally I'd use pig oil.

Our new horse is also a hippo in disguise! We brought some of the 7 day mud away spray and works well on legs, neck etc but can you use it on the girth area (I assume it would possibly cause the saddle to slip) I don't know what B does but he cakes mud all along his belly.

I love him so much and glad he loves rolling but god I could cry sometimes when I see him xx

I apply liberal amounts of Pig Oil on my horses legs (right up to above their hocks and knees), and to their tails. I apply it to their legs with a sponge every couple of days and to their tails once a week. Amazing stuff. The mud just rolls off and doesn't stick. To keep their head and mane clean I use a Snuggy hood (one of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Snuggy-Hoods-Turnout-Hood-Neck-Cover-Zip-Up-Navy-M_W0QQitemZ160393465962QQcmdZViewItem?rvr_id=162339885399&rvr_id=162339885399&cguid=bf1b71d112b0a0aa17b24202fffa5b22.

If your horse is living out 24/7 then a Snuggy Hood wouldn't do. In that case I use a full neck rug and the 7-Day Mud Away spray. Keeping bellies clean and mud free is always a challenge (unless you don't mind the 'wet-look' and apply a layer of Pig Oil to the area).
