My warmblood is so laid back its like riding a slug through treacle. He is 20 and we only hack about 3 times a week.He has been on Sixteen plus, and also tried Competition mix but still he is the same. Can anyone suggest anything? He is not anaemic or anything

i would not do oats if you ony hack, can make them fizzy and a handful. I used tiger oats when H was at riding school which where good ut took off them and he is fine. sorry to ask but is he fit enough for what you are asking ??

improve his fitness and you will be amazed

i agree it can make them fizzy but OP said its like riding a slug through treacle so think she might be looking for fizz?

sorry i didnt mean to offend you, I didnt say I was right I just meant i thought she wanted fizz, you could be quite right though and it may be too much *takes foot out of mouth*

Theres no need for rudeness.

I did think about oats, but dont want to buy a whole sack and then have to throw them. I am sure he is fit enough for 3 hours fairly slow hacking. Wondered about any supplements.

My ponio is usually a bit slow and lazy, but has perked up slightly recently since I've been giving him extra vitamins (I had a nutritionist come to see him, and that's what she recommended). He has his normal feed, and then I add Dodson & Horrell Equibites, which contain all the vits and mins he needs. Don't know if that might help your horsey?

pro pell plus seems to work on some horses, it has added vit/mins, and contains echinacea to boost the immune system..what are you currentley feeding and how much??

Is he being fed the recommended amounts of the current feed? If not, Id definately be adding some high spec vit & min supplement daily such as NAF's Pink Powder or that iron-rich vitamin liquid (Redcell?).

Failing that, how about a joint supplement? If he's that slow, he could well be a bit stiff? NAF Superflex has been brilliant for my 17 and 20yr old ponies. The 20yr old wasn't stiff before I put him on it (I didnt think), but definately seems more flexible now.

Agree with this 100%

I would try Pink Power first to help him get more out of his current feed.

Actually he is not on quite the full amount of feed for his size, mainly because he does so little work as I need to keep his weight down! He is on Newmarket Joint formula as he does have arthritis also Bute. He has apparently always been lazy and laid back, Ill try s ome vitamins as perhaps he is lacking in these Thanks folks.

recommend pink powder and hunting! nothing like a hunt to perk up the stuffiest of lazy beasts and the effect carries on a good while.
My lazy 14yo IDxTB gets SAD disorder he thinks unless he has periodic outings XC. Or else take him to a UK chasers etc course and give him a good pipe opener with another horse, you dont have to jump or anything, just a safe place to have a blast. As long as he is in regular exercise a short breeze wont hurt him and might cheer him up, but obv youll best know what condition he would be in for any of this....
