My 5 year old mare has always had a scar on her back right leg since she was younger but the other day I noticed she had managed to catch it and the scar had been pulled off leaving her leg extremely swollen and very hot. Since I have been walking her around about 3 times a day and rinsing it under cold water but what would be the best way to protect it now?

Depending on whereabouts on the leg it is..... longer term - lower legs = boots for exercise and turnout.... upper leg= more tricky, but allow it to heal as much as possible then cover with MSM cream. Short term, cold hosing and icing, if it is in a location that can be bandaged I would do so... if in doubt call your vet to ask advice, they come up with all sorts of ingenious tricks!

I use either sudacream (or any other nappy cream) or a zinc spray which protects it but lets it heal (got from vet but can buy online).

Would call the vet and ask advice if it is hot since the scab came off

Its been about 2 days now and there is no heat and the swelling has gone down quite a bit but not completely. It is just below the hock on the inside so I think I would be able to put boots on but I was thinking about something like excercise bandages when she is being ridden and stable chaps for when shes in maybe?
