It was dark so the photos dont show the true extent.. but her muzzle is padded out with wool- shes smothered in sudocrem to help give some lubrication (and help with the rubs)

What else can i do?

I have a shires one for are pony , but brought a bigger size then my hubby stiched in sheepskin , it hasnt rubbed , but may be you should buy a bigger one

This happened to my Shettie with hers so I made a cut on the bucket part of the muzzle on either side of the strap that sits undeneath - difficult to explain, but if you imagine that the top of the bucket is a complete ring, i cut the ring on either side of that strap - it doesn't affect how the muzzle works, but so far has left her much more comfy.

I lined the inside of my shires one with sheepskin and it hasn't rubbed since. Also if you bung then through the wash a couple of times, they soften too.

Greenguard, they don't cover the whole muzzle like the shires but IMO are rubbish for ponies (as they can still eat too much grass and the muzzle still rubs).

I have a Cob size shires on my shetland, it never rubs like the pony size on did, and I agree with what someone else said regarding washing them... it does help soften them.

I padded mine out with fibregee which has stopped it rubbing. I think unfortunately you might have to leave yours off for a few days while that heals - it looks pretty sore - bless him.
Does anyone use one of the old-fashioned plastic bucket type muzzles? I wondered what they were like for rubbing.

ruddy things!!

Im worried about her digital pulses as it happens so i may bring her in for a few days and that should give it the time to start to heal.

Poor girl, ive tried everything i can but its the only place it rubs randomly!

I padded mine with silky ribbons and this stopped all rubbing, I tried sheepskin to begin with but it didn't stop all rubbing.

Is it not white spirit that toughens their skin? I've heard something before about putting stuff on there skin to help the skin harden.

Surely someone can come up with a better design?

The reason I padded mine up was because it rubbed the hair away on a patch about 1cm from Jenny's eye. The hair grew back surprisingly quickly. I feel like you can't do right for wrong with the ruddy things. Jen needs hers on so she doesn't end up with whale blubber and yet having it on must give her constant aggravation with the rubbing.

Snuggy hoods do a head hood. I had same problems last year, couldn't even get a noseband on. They will line a hood with satin if you tell them where it rubs...might be expensive, but worth it IMO.
