How can you teach free walk? *with video to CC*

i did this class where you did your test and then the jugde chatted to you about it then you re-did it. she told me to swing your hips with the horse to get them to move forwards... luckily my horse loves to poke his nose forwards so generally gets good marks for his free walk.. sorry not much help but try and make sure that he is walking forwards not just wandering along

I would try warming up almost on buckle end in walk and trot and opening your inside hand away from the horse. Work on a large circle and keep at it until he drops his head, relaxes his back and really works through from behind. You have to keep your leg on but not asking for more pace just asking him to stretch and work through.

Nice rythmic test to start with, horse needs to be rounder but there are moments when he softens for a stride or two. you need to push him into the hand so he works over his back and forward and then he will want to stretch down so its a question of practice...work on your free walks when you have 'walk' breaks in your schooling and initially lead him to what you want by widening your hands and something that really worked for my lad, rubbing the withers!!!...lots of praise when he 'gets' what you want will help..its worth working on as its double marks but he has quite nice walk anyway so its a case of getting him to open the stride up..as said try walking your hips with him and dont worry about the front end and maybe try to close your eyes for a few strides and kick with alternate legs on the walk strides...hope some of that ramble helps...!!!

Thank you for all the tips so far

I lower my hands and hold them out to the sides to ask him to stretch, and use alternate legs to encourage to keep an active walk. However I'm not an expert, that's just what I do! When he works in more of an outline I think he will do it naturally, as he will feel the need to stretch down more.
