How coloured does a horse have to be for coloured classes?

Slightly odd question but the horse I'm hopefully getting arrival of in a couple of weeks time is coloured, but not very... It's basically white with about 3 very faded grey patches. It may look more "colourful" come summer but I was hoping to do some coloured ridden classes with her, however will she not do very well simply because she's not really well coloured like most others will be in the class? Do they give marks specifically for colour or would it just be the overall impression where it might let her down a bit? Just talking about local level / agricultural shows, nothing big.

If you google judging coloured horses there is a link to British Skewbald & Piebald Assoc. There is a whole page that tells you what qualifies as coloured. I think the ideal coloured is 50:50 colour & white. However coloured classes take into account how the horse goes plus conformation plus markings but if you get very low marks for the markings however good the rest is you may struggle to win! At a local level I suspect you can do what you like!

CHAPS and BSPA are the societies. Normaly Colour doesnt come into it, you are supposed to judge the horses as though they are all Bay. That said bad markings can create optical illusions and make a horse look badly conformed.

Coloured Ridden classes should be judged 50% manners, way of going, movement, 50% conformation & type.

Inhands normaly 60% conformation & type, 40% manners and movement

My mare is CHAPS registered and here is how coloured she is

Interesting, thanks guys. Jenna 1406, yeah yours is pretty minimal too! But at least thats quite an obvious splash of white - this horse just has faded grey patches, visible still I guess.

My other question is what is worn for coloured classes (ridden)? I've only ever done hunter, WH and M&M stuff in the past so everything I have is plain and hacking jacket style etc. Is it still plain tack for coloured classes? Hacking jacket or black jacket?

I have a very odd coloured New Forest pony. Ill be taking her to our local show but from what I can gather being coloured and New Forest is not a good combo!

Hi, I show my coloured (my profile photo) regularly and he isn't your typical type! Some judges (more often than not) really like him and he has won many classes but often you get judges who prefer the more typical type of patchy coloured so it really depends on the judge on the day!

I personally love the more quirky types of coloureds but I also have a more traditional tri coloured who I will be showing next year so will be interested to see what the judges make of her!

Your horse sounds as if it is 'greying' out, patches are fading with age? This is classed as 'historical' and if registered and accepted as coloured now then it won't matter if it goes totally grey in time as it can be proven to have been coloured by it's registration with the relevant society. (Though eventually you may feel out of place on a grey horse in a coloured class!)
an example...
