Took my mare out for a hack in the sun with a friend yesterday (was feeling mega brave) As we were going my Nancy was fine but after about ten minutes, she turned into a slug and went real slow (shes a big clydedales X so no surprises there) anyway then she started to feel lame I thought so I aksed my friend to look, but she couldnt see anything. another 5 min went by and she still felt awful so I said i was going back, friend said she would come back to. After less than 30 seconds, nancy turned into a forward going keen, enthusastic horse, and walked home like a racehorse!!!
She had me good and proper, and I wondered what I should do - bearing in mind I am mega nervous so if anyone suggests giving her (or me) a good whack, it wont happen!
thanks, hot buttered toast for the replies!!xxx

My pony is the same, as soon as he knows he's on the home straight he marches on. I would suggest not letting her get away with it....you have to make her finish the ride and not dictate it. Not exactly whacking but a tickle with the stick if she doesn't listen to your leg will help.

You won't use a whip, are nervous and she know it. You need to get tougher with her, she's taking the mickey :( If I were a horse I'd prefer one sharp crack to constant nagging of the rider's legs though.

Some horses do try it on.Mine did when long reining,he decided he didnt want to go up the hill and spun around,so I turned him around and then he went forward and up the hill.

Sounds like your horse knows he can get away with it!"!!!

Im a nervous rider too!!!!

Loving her! Fortunately you don't have to hit horses to communicate effectively these days :-) I knew one who'd be /terrified/ of certain things on the way out but completely blase on the way back. What we did was manage to go *just* past the scary thing then turn around and ride back by it confidently, then turn around again and proceed. After a while he figured I was on to him, he couldn't make a fuss about passing (outwards again) the third time and so only made a fuss abut /truly/ terrifying thing such as frosty leaves. If she does it again turn right round and continue as planned - she'll either have to think of a new trick or limp all the way home!
