How did everyone's horses cope last night?

I was at the field after dark because someone had stolen one of our electric fence energisers and the horses had pushed through the tape.

A couple of firework displays started at 7ish and the horses weren't bothered at all. They stood beside me as I tried to untangle electric fence tape in the dark.

The job became easier once the fireworks started because they lit up the sky and I could see what I was doing.

Early hiccup as I was underneath the lump taking his back boots off when a banger went off all four feet went up and luckily came down in the same place so I sat on a bucket with him for 10 mins and told him how good he was. After that he took no notice whatsoever. I was expecting a wrecked bed this am but he was fine. In fact his bed looked nicer than normal.

Didn't go down last night but YO would have contacted me if there was a problem.

We shouldn't have any that close to us anyway as we're between two villages and he's generally pretty relaxed about things like that - a waving buttercup on the other hand can reduce him to a quivering wreck :-)

Also, youngster out in field who is so chilled he's horizontal! A helicopter landed nearby in the summer and the others were all hooning around and he just looked at it and went back to munching grass!

Will check them this eve though as there are some local displays on but should be far enough away that they don't disturb them.

My 2 dogs were more upset I think than the horses

They stayed by my feet all night and the bitch was so upset by the bangs she p'eed herself

Poor thing.

Dreading Saturday night as thats when the big displays are going off

I schooled Jack in the outdoor with fireworks going on constantly across in the town, I had my i-pod on cos figured if I wasn't hearing them and stressing he wouldn't bother either... He was a star, worked really well and settled quickly to his tea as well. Decided against riding the baby though - 3yo stupid TB brain and fireworks prob not the best mix!

Didn't bat an eyelid. They started while I was long reining, she ignored them. Put her to bed and she immediately started eating her tea. Left her to it. She didn't lie down though, so maybe there were some louder/closer ones later in the evening.

Cat spent last year cowering behind the washing machine, and spent this year staring out of the window watching them.

Think tonight/tomorrow will be worse though.

When I went out to see them they were standing wathcing them but the field was a bit ' skid mark'y where they had obviosuly had a gallop round at some point so spent a good 20 mins treading down divots but it didnt look like they had sweated up and no injuries. More going off tonight and on Saturday in neighbouring villages so will still be vigilant, hopefully they will be a bit more used them.

I got mine in last night as wasn't sure what the newest edition would be like (the other 2 are fine with fireworks, but I do worry about them falling into the field) and didn't want to run the risk of running into the electric fence.

They were mighty unimpressed at being dragged from their field and put in, as they much prefer living out, but they appear to have had a peaceful night and were fine this morning. I was planning on keeping in tonight and tomo night, then they will stay out again.

Last night wasn't such a worry, as the village where they live has a huge display tonight. I checked on them mid-evening and not a peep. Tonight they are very close to the display, so I'll watch it from my field with a friend and a glass of wine each. I'm only worried because my mare is such a stresspot, so unsure of what her reaction will be.

Me too!

Didn't have ipod in as usual though as it's out of charge!

Mine wasn't spooking every time a bang went off, but she was buzzier than normal. Just more like she'd be out at a show than at home normally, if that makes sense?

Got some nice work done and enjoyed a beautiful big, properly organised display courtesy of Hopetoun House while we were cooling off.

It was only a mile or two away and think we had the best seat in the house!

They had some really clever fireworks that exploded into a smiley face, very cool! All the others on the yard were happy tucked up in their stables munching on hay, I bumped into YM doign a check as I was leaving.

Ours are in a barn so they can't see them which seems to cause the problems for mine.
There weren't many last night and those that there were weren't close.

However, their beds weren't great this morning - the TB had obviously box walked.

Saturday isn't going to be much fun as there are some people close to the barn having displays which will be much more noisy etc - lovely!

Wed night was actually worse round where our horses are kept than last night - they're on a quiet private estate tho and no one on the estate would have fireworks knowing about all the horses so we're very lucky.
There were some at nearby houses tho, outside of the estate, and the horses stood watching them!

Bless mine, they seem to think all the displays were put on for them, they seemed to be Oooohing and Aaahing away

Was taking them in at 6.30 and not a flinch from either of them. However we live near a big country estate that do shooting plus also weddings, so they are used to the bangs and see fireworks quite a few times a year. I think the worst scenario is where your horse doesn't like the noise but can't see the fireworks, like a barn. My stables open to the outside so they could see it all happening.

I was on a lesson and we didn't have a problem at all. There were some big bangs as well.

Some of the horses who were still out were stood watching and munching. When a bright firework went off from another direction they shuffled round for a better look! No one seemed bothered in the slightest.

I was expecting Lu to be a bit of a fire breathing monster last night due to a) loosing Riv b) being at new yard (since Sun) and c) fireworks going off as I led him in etc. He was a little 'forward' coming in but as soon as he had a hay net he couldn't have cared less. Bed was fine this morning and he'd clearly had a good sleep...

There will be more tonight and tomorrow though - just hoping he stays as chilled out.

Ron seems to like them

I was riding whilst there were a few big bangs (we were indoors) and he didn't notice them, but when we got outisde and he could see them, I had a job dragging him back to the stable as he wanted to stop and look. He's such a wally. I think they were far enough away to not be a problem.

someone let fireworks off outside our yard. we are the only house up this road, so we don't have any neighbours. they did it right from the gateway of the yard, and then threw their litter into my field. i had some rather terrified horses by the time i'd run up there from the house, but luckily no injuries. so angry.

don't understand why people come up here to set off their fireworks - its very obvious that its a yard with horses on it. its happened before, but the problem is as its not neighbours or anyone i know, theres no warning, suddenly were in WW3!

Very quiet round my way last night I think tonight & tomorrow will be noisy.
Mine dont mind I leave the lights & the radio on.

My lad is in at night currently so I stayed with him in his field stable through it all..and after the initial one or two from the pub across the road he was fine with the rest and ate his hay through it all! Better be safe than sorry though is my motto.

I went to check my boy when the display started (village display was about 2 fields away from our yard) and he and the others were stood watching with their ears pricked
grin.gif
He wasnt remotely bothered though, I watched the display for about 10mins with him then the dogs and I got cold and bored and went back inside
blush.gif

Dogs were fine too, which is wonderful after having a greyhound for a few years who was petrified
frown.gif

I checked him again when the display finished (I love living on site
grin.gif
) and he still was fine
smile.gif

I didn't worry. Did go to check them and they were either grazing or watching with an "awww pwetty" look on their faces.
