How did people cope with horses when they went to Uni?

I sent my eventer off on loan to HMS Dryad for use in the centre and help train riders etc. He came back better schooled than I ever got him! Now I run a riding centre and would love to have more good quality loan horses of all levels for my riders and staff to train on. No cost to you and a loving home for as long as you need (if the horse is right). A contract is agreed and a trial period to ensure everyone is happy before making a longer commitment. Works well for us so far!

I'm currently at uni and have 2 horses. I'm lucky in that my parents pay the livery, insurance, etc. But i pay for everything else feed, shoes, vet, teeth, physio, comp entries, lessons.

I don't go out much and i'm careful with my money so i can pay for my horses. I also come back from uni every weekend and also some Wednesday's to ride.

I took mine with me - just finished my second year at UEA in Norwich and he comes home with me at the end of May, then goes back up at the end of September. Fortunately my parents pay for him to be on part livery so I do him at weekends and ride etc. I have a sharer who does him on two weekdays so he gets enough exercise and has everyday turnout etc. In my first year of Uni he was on full livery as I wasn't allowed my car on campus so getting to him required a bus ride to my car, then a 40 minute drive etc, so bare that in mind. Putting him on loan was no longer an option after the ridiculous phone calls I had after him eg. will he teach my 13 stone boyfriend to ride after he'd been advertised as a 15 year old 14.2 fairly petite part arab.

I had my new forest pony when i was at uni and he went out on loan when i first went to uni. He had a lovely loan home and the child who loaned him hacked him out with Tina Cook and her young horses as her mum worked for Tina! Unfortunately Merlin didnt realise he was in such good company and kept ditching the child and buggering off. I lasted 3 months at uni then decided i would rather get a job and have my pony than be a student so i went and picked Merlin up and he came home!

I have one horse on DIY livery 20 minutes from home. When I went to uni (an hour away), I kept him there and commuted to uni. Luckily my class hours were good, it wasn't 9-5, there was a lot of emphasis on doing stuff yourself. It did, however, mean that for the last 4 years I've been either studying or at the yard :D I'm glad I did it the way I did though, it's definitely prepared me for when I have a "proper" job and still have to look after him :)

I graduate in 3 weeks .... but then I've got to do a postgrad year :(

I went to uni last year and lived in halls (i decided to live at home this year as uni only half hour from my home) Anyway last year I paid someone to do him one day a week. I know a local girl who is horse mad and horseless and parents just can't commit to her having her own so I basically said to her if she mucked out and rode and sorted him out in week she could use him as her own for free and I would ride at weekends. It worked out briliantly....she got her "own" horse which I et her compete...there were rules about jumping and fast hacking as he was a quirky TB and she was 12years and a novice but she competed local dresage and had lessons on him. She thoroughly enjoyed it.
I pay same as you....mum and dad pay livery but I pay for haylage, bedding, feed, shoes worming etc etc.
Maybe if you could find someone like that and say if they paid contribution for feed and shoes (what u would normally pay) and looked after horse then they could have it basically on loan??? I did sell him before going into second year as he just didnt want to jump anymore and I did. The idea was for me to wait until I finished before getting another....withi 6 weeks another neddy came along. I just couldn't be without!
