How did we manage before fly rugs?!

I was thinking this earlier in the summer and posted this question

Like your question, it got quite a good discussion going. I think they have their place for some horses and for many they're probably not needed but people buy them thinking they are being good owners.

I hadn't seen your thread; it probably seems more relevant at the moment in this weather! I totally agree that I bought my fly rugs (sorry have 3, sensitive horse is my excuse...) thinking I was being a caring owner!

Well after weeks of being turned out 24/7 without a fly rug, I had to buy Rosie one yesterday as she was getting eaten alive all of a sudden.

Flies mainly bother her around the eyes, though. Thank god for fly masks.

Let's hope the horse flies go soon; the other flies aren't so bad!

I try to avoid using the fly rug as much as possible as on balance I think my mare would rather feel the sun on her back and be able to enjoy mutual grooming sessions. However she isn't overly bothered by the flies or I would rethink my mindset on this.
