Basically going to be getting a horse after christmas, but apart from all websites wondered where you all got your horses from. Did you buy them as youngsters or ready made etc.
I want to find the right horse and would be interested how all you guys come across your horses.
Feel free to add pics so I can have a gander

I spent 6 months looking, and was on the verge of giving up. As a last resort I posted a wanted advert. 8 months on I have my near on perfect horse who cost me less than half my budget, including tack.
Woop!

I put an ad out looking for a horse to share in the adtrader and I got a call about Monty. I shared him for 3 years a few times a week until his owner sold him to me for £1.

I then moved to London, Zoom was already in the field that I moved Monty to. Her owner moved away and asked me to look after her. I looked after her for two years and then a couple of weeks ago her owner sold her to me for £1.

Don't know what I'd do if I actually had to look for a horse to buy........mine have just sort of arrived!

Mine was advertised in my local feed shop. I saw the picture of him and liked him straight away. I wasn't looking for a horse at the time as I was 6 months pregnant!!!
I was very naughty and took the advert and picture home with me so nobody else could buy him.
When I told my friends I had seen a horse I liked and wanted to buy they all thought I was mad until I showed them the picture of him. I went to see him and took my husband with me to try and talk me out of buying him.

My husband liked him so much he bought him for me!! Still have the same horse 6 1/2 years later

I saw Genie on horsemart, called about her and bought her less than a week later.

Mazzie was kinda word of mouth, I knew of the guy (Argentine polo player) but a friend knew him fairly well so she made the contact and we went to see the ponies he was selling.

Bob- A friend brought him, didnt get on with him, loaned him to me then I brought him! Hunted him, Sjed him and Ht'd him after straightening him out a bit, and sold him

He was 5when i got him, 7 when I sold him.

Lucky I trawled all the ads, internet etc, went to see several, then a friend said I should go to her trainers to see what she had.

Rang her up, she told me about 3 horses of which only one was the age I was looking for (5-7). Went up to have a look, the one I liked the sound of on the phone wasnt what I wanted, saw Lucky loose jump, liked her alot, rode her, liked her even more, but didn't want a 4yr old! Went home, weighed it up a bit and decided the £ was right, and she would be a good fun project if nothing else!!
When I went to try her.

Now, usually the internet, although I have a dealer who buys in small ponies for me.

Two of my best horses have been word of mouth, one that a friend viewed and wasn't suitable for her buyer but was for me (and I wasn't even looking. "You have GOT to get this one" So I did)

The other came about because I was moaning on here about the lack of decent 13 handers, and subsequently bought a brilliant pony from JM via recommendation.

either word of mouth or freeads when i got merl on loan then bought him, minnie was sis in laws, so bought her to keep merl company really...but after xmas sometime I shall be on the hunt...keep looking at horsemart, horsequest, freeads etc but nothing is tickling my fancy i'm daunted by dealers but will prob go see some if they are any interest.

Best of luck with your serch too...exciting times

I cannot believe how much goddy had changed from when you first got him to when you sold him, he was a lovely neddy.
And I love Lucky she is beautiful, nice pop on her to

I think some of the best horses are sold through word of mouth, would just like to find one as usually not the right height the ones that are for sale.
Will still scourer the internet, never know what I might find.

A lot of people have ponies of JM shame doesnt have any big beasts for me :P

See I have seen nothing at all, I am quite fussy mind, I get sick of looking as I just like to have a look for when I am after one after xmas but not finding anything. Well will properly look after xmas and go for every option to find the right one. Best of luck finding one for you

WoM - Dad's a farrier so finds out early

When I was SJing you used to find ponies went almost exclusively by WoM / recommendation via trainers - if they had to be advertised there was something wrong!
With the harness horses they tend to come from the standardbred sales and we breed some.
Riding horses - we've bought from dealers (had v.good and v.bad experiences with different ones), or we go to Ascot and buy from the sale there, or through Dad's contacts.

Word of mouth. I bought my worm-ridden, lice-infected, one-shoe-only-and-that-one's-loose, Irish cob from some ones's back garden in Kildare and they wouldn't sit on her either! A trainer who had a good reputation assured me she was perfect for me and she was right. With a bit of TLC she blossomed into a beauty and we've been together for nearly 10 years!

The black one in my pics just in coversation with a friend who had just brought him from a gypsy. And i have never had such a more wonderful horse then him.

The Brown one out of the ads paper,he was 40 miles away.

Friend was looking for me (didn't think I was allowed) and madam just happened to be at the riding school I was at (though she wasn't in it, and I'd never seen her) she came "until she was sold" (1 month trial though i was too stupid to realise) then bought her after the month

Fell in love with riding school mount, had to buy him and 5 years later still have him. Will never sell him. Wanted daughters horse from the moment we came onto our yard - YO had bred and produced her. When we sold her naughty pony last year, she offered her to us. Cost a small fortune, but she is so worth it.

First horse - girl at school told me about him
Second horse - hacked past her field just after she was born, watched her first steps and pestered farmer until he sold her to me
Third horse - local free paper
Fourth horse - breed society sales list
Fifth horse - local free paper
Sixth horse - my third horses' dentist bred her and I mentioned to him I was looking
Seventh horse - Horse and Hound classifieds

Hemir: I had answered someone on a french forum about her 17.1hh for loan, but didn't get an answer from this woman, but from someone else...offering me a 12.1hh pony
tongue.gif
hmm So my mum kindly replied saying that 12.1hh was a little small! So she said that she had a 15.3hh ex endurance racer for sale (we weren't looking to buy), who we would be able to pay for in monthly installements. We travelled 6hrs to see him (YES 6hrs...) I didn't like him, but sat on him, and trusted him with all my heart
tongue.gif
So a week later, in the snow, he came home
smile.gif
That was nearly 4 years ago now, and time has flown past, we have had a lot of ups and downs but I wouldn't swap him for the world!!

Mr V - I had just put Hemir up for sale (thinking it was for the best that I got another horse!), V came up for sale or loan (won't go into details), there was no way I could afford him, but my RI said that we should go and see him and consider loaning him...we went along and saw him, she got on him and he bronced around the field with her - so glad she got on him first! But we said we would have him on trial, and he's been with me since march, we've been through a lot, had lots of really good days, but also a lot of bad days. And although he's not really the sort of horse I want to own, he really has taught me alot. I didn't feel as though I could ride when I first got him!!!
