Was just wondering how you all bought your horse/ponies? Would love one of my own but I'm at home with toddler twins and my husband says NO everytime I tell him I would love my own horse.

How did you do it? Beg ? Borrow? Save ??

You buy the twins a pong big enough for you to ride then upgrade as they grow...

Think getting one is cheap (on loan/share etc) but looking after them is expensive!!! Can you rehome one from a charity?

I was left a lot of money when my father died, which meant I could buy my own horse. Thumper was bought from the same pot - but a number of years after the first horse.

I saved half and worked a second job for the other half! Took me a year, or thereabouts. My lovely OH helps me with the livery costs, but it means a lot to me that I bought him with my own money.

I got bought my first pony (for £250) and have just managed to make a profit on them all. Pip was only half the cost of my last riding pony, so I used to left over to buy him harness.

I had some money saved up in case the right horse came along - and he did! But I did take him off the track (or out of hell depending on your perspective) for not a lot of money. For the other horse, I sold all my wordly goods on Ebay and bought him. Hopefully by the time these two go to a happier place, I'll have saved enough to buy myself something with nice non-TB feet and half a brain.. Also I always offer to be the designated driver and save up my beer money just in case.

My first pony I bought when I was 12 yrs old ..my mum said I would have to sell all my Christmas presents to pay for him ( thinking it would never happen) all my school friends rallied around and managed to sell every present by the end of the week ....Had pony for 20 yrs!!
My First horse I lied to my mom ...was a gift horse but told her I was looking after it for someone .... Till a big vet bill came and I had to ask her for help ?!

I'd saved up about half of the money I needed to buy and was planning on waiting until I got my annual bonus in April to help with the rest but I meet my perfect horse in October and my lovely gran was kind enough to loan me the rest until I could pay her back in April!

Savings - but bought first pony for children but as he was 13.2 he was big enough for me to ride. Then we had a 14hh and now a 14.2 so I ride him sometimes when my daughter is at school. I am happy with this as I don't want a full time horse for myself or to ride everyday. There is a 16.1hh on the yard that I can hack out too sometimes.

I have a part time job so this pay the livery/bills etc.

Perhaps you could look around for a share or loan? Bear in mind you will need to find childcare so that you can go and ride/look after the horse.

Oh dear i feel guilty now - have to say my mum's bought mine, first one when i was 12 (had a pony on loan at 10) he was a first real 'purchase' though as my sister got her first pony when she was 7 - he was only £200. No idea where my mum got the money from actually although none were ever really expensive til I got my horse who was £3000 when I was 16. Guess it helped we had our own land as mum was left some cash after my nan died. Maybe that's where the rest of the money had come from too come to think of it.

I couldn't afford livery now though so have to thank my lucky stars for having the field

Husband lent me the money for my horse, paid him back from overdraft/savings...he also bought our daughters pony ( she cost £250 - bought from a friend) and then he bought our mare earlier this year, also from a friend for £1500 - tip buy froma friend- you know the horse, and generally get a good price!! Another tip- buying them is not usually too expensive unless you want something a bit special, its the livery and the ''must-have'' essentials (eg saddle cloth in every colour known to man) that ends up costing. Good luck - you will end up with your own horse - I had a gap from being a teenager up until being 35 when I got a horse again - but I think you will appreciate it more

Dad bought the first pony. I took out a loan from the bank for no.2. No3. my husband bought for me. It was a nutter so I sold it and gave him the money back. No.4 was on loan until we bought her - hubby paid for that too.

Forgot what a bloody nice bloke he is.

I am surprised you have the time to think about a horse with two babies !

I firstly had loan horses then I bought a horse very cheaply as a project. Had him for 2 years then sold him on for rather a good profit which enabled me to buy the horse I have now.

I brought my first horse out of money I had saved for my wedding, lucky my husband was very understanding. The next two I brought from the sale of the previous one, if that makes sense??

Totally agree about buying a pony big enough for yourself, my mum rides a pony!

My income and outgoings at the time were pretty equal so I had to work overtime to put aside extra pennies. All the while I was loaning Brandy and after about two years, when I'd scraped together a very meagre amount, her owner sort of said dreamily one day how she'd accept x amount for Brandy (less than I'd saved!!) and I more-or-less presented her with a cheque on the spot. She was very cheap though because the owner wanted her to stay on the same yard and she's got her little crazy issues that would send any normal person running for the hills.

Parents bought my first pony then upgraded from then on until the oldest died and didnt leave much spare on insurance

Bought my own companion pony for £95 plus £5 delivery

Then loaned after that, Hubby was going to buy me a horse last year but he had to go back when we got married

My most recent purchase was through a friend who knew of an extremely cheap well bred Warmblood because his owner used horses like tractors

Had him 8 weeks and whenever I tell people how much he cost their jaws drop

Its not so much the finding/loaning etc its as everyone says the upkeep that costs the most.

I saved up for my horse 12 years ago. I was lucky enough for my partner to recently buy me another four horses - very spoilt.

Parents refused till I came home from school age 12 with a full financial plan inc cost of purchase and livery/hay/feed/shoes/tack etc. Dad bought me 1st pony for xmas as result, think he was impressed by fact I'd researched it. Sold that (13.2, I got too heavy) and bought Lottie with what I sold pony for, Dad bridged gap (£200) and then bought her tack for my birthday. Good old dad.

I then bought Beau, begged and borrowed as I had to have her, never regretted it, total investment!! only paid £700 for her, peole keep trying to buy her off me for around £4-5000, people do not understand the phrase 'not for sale'!!!! Was good thing she was unbacked as I couldn't afford a saddle for her for ages, just long reined her everywhere and backed her bareback!!

Then came iceni. I 'lent' myself money out of my tuition fees then set up a payment plan with the uni. Really struggled to pay back but worth it so far!!!

Couple of youngsters and projects along the way bought with tax rebates or windfalls but usually sold at profit or at least break even.

Hope I bought with profit from selling a saddle!! She now needs a long term loan home as a companion.
