How did you all manage to buy your horse/pony?

My horses have all been bought with a mixture of loans and some savings - but mostly loans . I just smile at the bank manager and get him to top up my ever growing loan from him. Luckily im in ireland and good horses tend to be a wee bit cheaper than in england.

I'm saving for one. Any spare money I get goes to my house deposit and horse fund.

I'm not sure how much I am going to need. I only want a horse for hacking and maybe 1 or 2 comps a year if I can get transport. Trouble is I want a horse of 16.2hh or bigger

I used to have part loan horses and then I had two horses that I rode for the owners and would look after them when they went away. Then on Valentines Day this year my horse arrived bought by my wonderful OH! I would say though, it isn't just the purchase of the horse the main cost is all the other things; tack, insurance, livery, shoes, dentists, back people, rugs, etc. etc..But if you want it enough it will happen. I learnt to ride at 8yrs. old and have now got my first horse of my own at the age of 53!!!!!Hope ti doesnt take you so long!!!

my first mare was a present from mom and dad after we moved from the big smoke to the back arse of nowhere, she only cost 500 quid tho. my current fella was bought for me by dad 6 months after my first mare died. I'd love to be able to save up and buy my own the next time!

My first pony cost the princely sum of £17 in 1964. My grandfather was a bookmaker and his view was that a pony shouldn't cost more than a pony i.e. £25.

Always ridden/ loaned since I was a little girl but mum and dad were never in a position to buy me one. Once I finished uni (with a huge debt!) I got a job and had no social life for about 2 months, pretty much saved all my wages and bought Archie a 7 month old New Forest gelding for £700. Not that he's ever for sale but seeing him grow and develop is definately the best £700 I've ever spent, plus he lives off fresh air so low maintainance costs! It is such a great feeling buying your own from your own hard work/ savings, however long it takes, it's well worth it!

Coming from completely non horsey parents i worked in the greenhouses through the summer holidays when i was 13 and saved up £150.00 (1985) my parents, grandad and Aunty made up the rest and i bought my first pony for £450.00. After that i have usually bought horses cheap and sold on for considerably more and have bred a few too. Would never dream of paying alot for a horse, lol, im to tight, but crack on and put the work in myself.

My parents wouldn't buy me a pony when I was a kid. I begged and begged but no so when I got a job I said "I'm gonna buy a horse" They thought it was a "FAZE" but it wasn't I loaned a fell pony for 18months and then bought my own aged 24!!! She was a 3 1/2 year old Sec D mare and cost me £1000, I only had £950 so I had to empty my copper jar and lend £10 off my mum plus another £25 to get her home.....
Best thing I ever did and now I have 2. I topped up my loan to buy her as she was a bargain, currently breaking her to ride and then sell on for a profit I hope...

Mum and dad bought me first pony when i was young and then had a break while had my sons, then after giving up working with horses decided to get my own again, was lucky enough to be given my lad, at 17.3hh he is on the expensive end of the scale to keep but he is well worth it.

Our first horse when i was 6, My mum had a car crash and got a compressed spine told she could never ride again so obviousley went out and spent her compensation on a horse

2nd god knows i was so excited to have a pony at last i cant remember,
3rd given him because of vices.
4th same
5th given because we were a good home

6th My dad payed too much tax or something and got the money back

Just picked up comet's new saddle today i feel horendous! My dad a photographer sold his camera(behind my back) to afford it!
I feel so guilty, he still has his sports photography one but, oh my gosh i couldnt beleive it!
I realllllly need a job now, i cant be having them doing thingss likee that!

Ist one was given to me, when I sold him to go to college put the cash in bank for a few years until I could afford the upkeep again
2nd Used said money just came home from work one day and said "by the way just bought a horse"
sold that one due to time and upkeep costs - money back in bank
Kids pony - a bargin not to be sniffed at so small raid of horse fund
Horse fund sacred - enought money in it to buy horsy just need to wait for kids to grow enough so they can ride my next one.

My first was half each between me and parents (I was 12 at the time!).

The others I have paid for. I am very proud that I have always bought my own things, horses included!

Originally my parents bought me my very first pony (in fact they bought me my first 3/4 ponies then first horse...!) after a HELL of a lot of pleading as you do at a young age - you know leaving little notes round the house with drawn pictures of you hugging "your" pony.. bleuch makes me sick now!

Then Ive had a few project ponies who've made me enough to then start buying my own recently. I bought my last 2 horses through my own money Id made through them. But the recent "project pony" was bought jointly by my dad and boyfriend who'll get some extra back when I sell it

had to wait till i was 34 to get my very own, think it was part loan and part savings

then i lost her to a broken leg and a very nice person thought of me when a horse she knew needed a home, first she came on loan but then she was gifted to me for the huge sum of £1

and then along came another gift horse

i know i've been very lucky as i would have had to have waited a long time to save enough for another. the kids first pony we bought 4 years ago and we still have the little sh!t, think that was savings, the foal was bought for my daughter with money i got from the sale of our house

I bought the first one with the money left over from a house sale - only had a small mortgage then!!!
Sold him before I got married then had horses on loan or rode other peoples when the children were small as I didn't have the time to commit fully. Once daughter was 7 we bought her a Welsh Section A from the pony sales for £340.00 with the intention of lead rein showing at county level and a bit of pony club, sell on hopefully for a profit unfortunately she went to the vets for Xrays and when she was coming round from the anaesthetic unsupervised she fell and broke her leg (uninsured)and had to be euthanased however the vets didn't admit liaibility but paid us what she was worth. We bought the Section B with that money and still have her.
Recently bought a Welsh sec D X TB from the welsh sales dropped a hint to my mum that I would have to get a loan to pay for her and she offered the money and I paid her back at £100 per month, after 10 months she said to forget the rest as daughter was now riding horse and mum could see how much enjoyment she was getting from her.

I brought Buddie (welsh A) with my birthday money when I was 15, 7 years ago for £60.
I used to save back my dinner money for school to pay for his rent/food/wormers. I had a weekend job working at stables too.

I bought Bear 2 years ago this month, I put £500 down on him, the breeder let me take him and then I paid her a further £700, £50 a week! OH helped.

I bought Bertie when he was born, obviously didn't have him till he was weaned. But I paid her money here and there till he was ready to have! OH helped me pay for him!

Even though my OH doesn't ride they are ''our'' horses.!

I had a horse on loan who broke a leg and had to be PTS - so with his insurance money I bought my first horse, a Welsh Section D, for £1500.

Sold him for £3500 2 or 3 years later, bought the next one (ID x TB) for the same amount, he was PTS with navicular 2 years to the day that I bought him (no insurance payout, they alledged he would have made a companion horse)

My mum and dad GAVE me (unheard of for them!) £2000 as they felt so sorry for me! Plus told OH that we could afford to put some money in ourselves, so bought piebald ISH....

then sold him for same as I paid for him, bought my latest horse (SF) with that money + my half of the proceeds of our house sale

Sold the SF for £1500 more than I paid for him a year later

Next horse to be funded from my redundancy money I hope

My uncle promised me a horse if I were to get a First, I don't think he ever really thought he would have to fork out the £1,500 but it was the incentive I needed to study for the first time ever!

First ever pony as child was from a modest Premium Bond win, but parents paid keep.( half a crown a week grass livery)

my Dad left me some money when he passed away BUT i have to say i would give up my horse tomorrow if i could have my Dad back and remind myself about that on a pretty regular basis.

Just logged on this morning as couldn't get on last night and am amazed at how many of you replied. Thanks, its very interesting reading how you managed to get your horses....

I've already tried to argue my point that the twins would love to learn to ride as they spent last summer at a yard as I had a horse on a share basis. My husband is very very mean!!

Got my first pony when I was 13. I had to cash in all the Premium Bonds that had been given to me over the years to buy him myself for the princely sum of £75.
I also had to cycle round the local area knocking on farmer's doors to try and find a stable and field to rent............I'm sure my parents did it as part of a test to see if I were serious enough that I would look after him myself.
He is buried in our top paddock.

ahhh bananaman what a lovely story, I've never owned any of my ponies when I was young, they were always on loan. But I used to do a paper round to feed and shoe my first pony when I was 14! God shoes were cheap back then!!!!
