I had a share horse who's owner was moving her to a new yard too far away for me to keep riding, I was heartbroken. The YO of the current yard said to her "I have a horse doing nothing at the moment if your sharer wants to loan her"... and so I met Hopalong. I can still vividly picture the first time I saw her, this wee fluffy bay thing in the back corner of a dark stable, have to confess it wasn't love at first sight compared to the big, sleek IDxTB I'd been sharing!
However, she VERY quickly won me over and we spent 9 months being happy hackers pootling around getting to know each other. Mr FigJam and I then got married and moved house and I had to tell the YO I wouldn't be able to keep the loan of Hopalong up as it was too far. Even more heartbroken this time around...
The YO decided she didn't want Hopalong back full time and would prefer to sell her, so I asked how much (£1k inc tack and a couple of rugs) and Mr FigJam was railroaded into agreeing it was a good deal! I had no idea just how good a deal at the time, but looking back she has been worth many times that to me, taking me from having never competed/gone XC EVER, to PN in the space of 18 months! She has been the most fantastic first horse for me and I love my "boring wee bay pony" to bits.
So it was definitely a bit of fate/luck that brought us together- I've never gone horse shopping since she found me!
My little Arab I got on long term loan when I left uni as my old mare had various lameness problems meaning she was never going to do more than hack. Bought him 6 months later (having borrowed money from everyone I knew to pay for him!)
Roo, we bought for my Oh when he decided he wanted to get back into riding after a year's break after his last mare ruptured her ddft. Bought him on basis of right size, colour, and price and passed vet - i was literally that uninterested! It was a passing phase - 6 months. Figured I would hang on to him til spring and then look to sell as a backed 4 year old (bought unbacked 3) ... That was 18 months ago and he is going NOWHERE!
Were given a steeplechaser by a friend who had a big string of racehorses, to replace another of his which we'd had on permanent loan. Took the steeplechaser out hunting the next week - he seemed horrified at the thought of jumping ANYTHING. We were too polite to mention it to the late owner. He then told us 3 months later that we'd been given the wrong horse - it was in fact a rather nice flat racer who'd won a few races but turned nappy. Well, he was never nappy with us. We had him for years and he hunted every season, but we only took him out with the fell packs after that!
Mine was a purchase at Melton Mowbray sales, saw him, fell in love and was sold him there and then... he never went through the ring.
Best thing I've ever done, he's been fantastic for me, and I love him to bits!
2 years ago I saw a friend at a show who said to me I have just had a foal born would suit me perfectly. I said I am looking but not quite ready for a second horse.
2 years later I was out riding and saw her out on her horse she said she still had the foal now 2 years old waiting for me although she was advertised for sale. I went to see her and it was fate I had to have her, the little filly had sat in the field and waited for me for 2 years
