We have had the pick of the litter. We had a choice from 3 bitches and 1 dog JRT pups.

We have gone for the ugliest of the litter - she will be rough haired - white with a black and tan patch under one eye. The others are beautifully marked - but she just 'did it' for us.

She was the only one that that seemed happy to see us. She pootled over and sat by my foot. The others just stayed huddled together.

I tapped my shoe and she yapped to play - wagging her whole bum!

Can't wait to get her home.

My border collie had already gone to a home but was brought back as she was 'lively'

All border collies are lively! That's what make them such fantastic dogs!
She has turned out to be the most faithful, calm dog I have ever owned - excellent manners too.

So how did you choose your puppy from the litter? And do you think I have made the right choice from the litter I could choose from?

I chose Boris as he had a patch on his back shaped like a numnah! :)

Also he was boisterous, he was dunking his brothers in a birdbath when we were looking at them and was fearless.

It helped that he only had one ball so I got him a lot cheaper too! ;) Thankfully the shy one dropped by the time he went in to have them chopped off.

My mum picked Daisy as out of 16 (yes a litter of 16 Dobermans!) she came over to my mum and climbed straight into her lap and went to sleep!

They are both true to their personalities 6 years on- Boris is still hyperactive and a little unhinged and Daisy likes to sleep for 22 hours of the day.

It was her eyes that did it for me & the plastic flowerpot she brought me. Everyone else... OH & Mum chose a different pup, but I was sure she was the one for me. She's 12 now & has been the best dog ever.

We had pick of all the boys. There was one beautifully marked bitch left but we wanted boys. I looked at all of them for their faces, really, then temperament. I wanted a calm, affectionate and cuddly boy who would be happy as a pet as opposed to a working dog. I'd already had a massive chat with the breeder re the parents' temperament and what they were like.

Bear was the first one I looked at and I came back to him after looking at all of them and rejecting all bar one because of the face. The one that looked like him had a pink spot on his nose and wasn't as happy to be held.

OH chose Zak for being the naughtiest who climbed out of the cage and threw himself at him! We have had moments of wondering why he chose the naughtiest, but the OH likes a spirited dog who isn't 'easy'.

They're very different dogs, both adorable, both hard on their own ways but both worth it.

It was easy for me when i chose my GSD. I had already decided that i really wanted a long haired dog. The breeder had 4 pups, 2 bitches (one long haired, one short) and 2 dogs (again one long and one short). But Starkey was the first of the 4 that came staright over to us. And he had very similar markings to our last GSD

Paddington was the last left of a litter of 12 so had no choice. He was digging holes in the garden with his mum when I first saw him, then wee'd on me when I picked him up. But I just had a feeling he'd make a lovely friend to follow on from my amazing Dalmation who i'd just had to have PTS :(

He's proved me right :)

Hector was 15 months old when I got him, wish i'd known him as a pup though.

was the same when i was getting my cat from a little of 4 little kittens :)
she was the most liveliest and came over to us :) she was the one and now im glad we picked her :D

We pick up our new pup later on this afternoon - I can't wait :D

He chose us. The first time I saw them was when the breeder brought the whole litter up to the yard, and as everyone else had a pup to cuddle, I went to have a look. One pup kept coming away from his sleeping brothers to lick my fingers through the bars, so I had a cuddle :D I got quite attached just in a few minutes, so rang my OH to ask him if he wanted a pup, and he agreed to come and see them! So a couple of days later we went to the breeder's house, and the one pup in particular came running straight up to my OH and scrabbling to be picked up. It was the same one I had 'bonded' with a few days before! And when we finally went to leave, the others all went back into the cage, but Dexta as he is soon to be known followed us back to the car :D So he sealed his own fate! :)

Soooooo excited now!! :D

Wolfie aka Baba
Babs was the biggest pup, it was a choice between him and Pepe Le Peu, Baba was a bully and always first in the food, out the door - everywhere :D

Roly

Roly was the pick of the litter. He was bold, but not in your face. Curious but not overly so. Playful and quite thoughtful.

Lil
Lil was the last puppy left. So no choice there. She was a horrendous gobshite - bullying her parents for their ball! :D

my first whippy chose us ,we had a pick out of 10,knew we wanted a bitch, this little blue brindle came over to us,and thought yep this is the one then realise he was he ..and then this little black black bitch came over to us and that was it..peggy our first black whippy

also out 2nd whippy found her way into outr lives after she was at a event while my son was playing with her and she was the last of the litter to go..she was slightly older at 12 weeks and already had her 1st jab

after having our name name for another whippy out of 6(the breeder kept 3 and we knew we also wanted a bitch and told the breeder what i wanted, and she chose lucy for us which has turned out fab

Didn't have a choice with the first two. Millie was the last one left but so pleased to see us and we just clicked so perhaps would have chosen her anyway. Had a litter from her and had Mouse back and kept her.

Jim was always my favorite (Millie's 2nd litter) as he was so sweet and loving BUT a little shite with it - still is lol!! But he ended up being the last one left :D So someone phoned but didn't come back to me, dad said if no one called in 2wks I could keep him. Had about 3 days left and someone emailed (grr!!) so mum said "delete the email and don't tell dad" and dad said "delete the email don't tell mum" and neither knew what the other said so I got Jim - YAY!! lol

Because he was so far away (over three hours), the breeder sent lots of photos over the phone of puppies and Mum and Dad.
I wanted a boy, and not one with too much white and there was only one puppy that fitted those criteria! It sounds a bit casual, but the breeder was recommended through a very close friend so I trusted her judgement with temprament etc.
When I collected him, he made a beeline for me, ignored the friend who had come with me (as a nice warm comfy lap to sit on /throw up/ wee on during the journey home), and came galloping back every time in the garden when we had a play before setting off.
And he's been the best little dog, spoilt rotten of course!

Always knew you were sneaky. what you like? Lol
So they both wanted you to have jim then ???

Very funny!! Many years ago, a very well known terrier man called Bert Gripton, was asked how he picked the best puppy in a litter. "Easy" he said "you let every one else pick what they want, and you keep the one that's left. They always leave the best one behind"!!

Alec.

Well I couldn't cope with being dogless anymore (that lasted a week) and heard about a pup that was 2 weeks old and the only one left in the litter because she was ugly... She was beautiful big brown eyes with eyeliner markings and a little lemon patch over each ear. So pretty and she still looks like a pup!

Went to see her brought her (was in big trouble for that one as I forgot to tell anyone what I was doing), went every day to bond until we could bring her home and she has been an utter minx ever since!

Lots of folk fell in love with her and were desperate for one of her pups so spent 18 months finding a cracking dog to put her to with the idea of keeping the bitch in the litter. In typical style she threw 4 bitches. First one was immediately named Yoda because she was so fat her ears stuck out, very aptly named as she turned out to be deaf and well you can't sell a duff dog can you? She was the one everyone wanted as well! Next was Plum who was the spitting imagage of her mother and well you can't sell your beloved dogs mini me can you? Next up was Bron who from the very first instance we knew would be trouble (she isn't at all but its our excuse and we are sticking to it) she was off on a mission before she was out of the sack and you can't sell a naughty pup can you? Last but not least was Mia who my brothers dog fell in love with and she stole her away! They all go to stay with Mum during the day and then we chop and change them all around depending on who wants to do what when we pick them up! Our dogs really do have the life of reiley!

We had lots of arguements about which ones to sell (they were supposed to be sold to help Mum and Dad have a honeymoon)... If anyone needs an excuse I have loads and learnt even more!

I didn't!
I was living in a maisonette in the middle of a housing estate. I owned a tiny car and worked full time. I had never owned a dog and had no intention of having one at that point.
So obviously when my livery yard owner bred a litter of 12 and couldn't shift them all, I got talked into having the last one left!!!

Cough ... so not the way to enter into dog ownership!

As it turns out I appear to have the dream dog, a black lab who now shoots, is almost ready to start competing at agility, has won my dog-hating parents around to the point they go gooey/gushy over their grand-dog!

We had pick of the litter for our Boxer and I picked up Hugo straight away, had a cuddle and we all knew instantly he was the one.

We werent planning on getting another dog as we'd just had our Clumber pts a few weeks before and our older Clumber didnt had long to live so thought we' start looking once she had gone.
I was helping a friend pick a dog and done all the research for a GSP. The day before she asked my mum to go with her to the breeders as she didnt know what to look for. When there they picked a dog from the litter and my mum picked up this puppy which the breeder said he was blind in one eye from being scrached by another puppy.
My mum fell in love him and had to have him. His one eye has perfect vision and never had any probles with it. He has turned out to be much bigger than his brother.

We chose from 5.
4 boys and 1 girl so that narrowed it slightly.
1 boy had uneven facial marking so he was sadly out but he had also been chosed by someone already.
The remaining three we looked at evenness of feet markings as they were all pretty similar otherwise. We pick him in under 2 weeks now!

I got pick of the litter when chosing Loki.
I went to view the puppies at 4 weeks old and had a good cuddle of them all, but didnt make any choice.
I had to wait until the pups were 6 weeks old when i went again and met up with the stud dog owner and the secretary of the breed club.
They then picked up every pup one by one and assessed them on their merit. From the 8 pups they short listed the 3 best.
We took these 3 pups aside and each one was stood on the table in show stance and assessed on their conformation, colour, temperament etc.
I dismissed one as it wasnt quite the markings i wanted (too similar to my other dog) and was left with two.
They went over both for over an hour then told me they were very similar and either one would make me a good show dog so it was then whichever one i liked best.
Both were absolutely lovely so it was this point i was able to use my heart and go with the one i just felt that extra little connection with.
I sat with them on the floor for a while but i knew straight away which one i wanted :D

Here is Loki during his assessment. What a little stunner :D

I collected him 2 weeks later and he has been the best dog i could have ever wished for.

Only two in the litter, and I picked the one with the nicest markings. My cousin got the other, and I picked well as hers is a ratty wee thing in comparison :D

I saw and 'chose' mine when they were a day old

The breeder asked me which colours I wanted and handed two over and they were marked down as mine! Funnily enough, at a day old, they all looked the same. I went to see them again when they were 4 weeks old and would never have chosen Elvis at that point. He was sitting well away from his siblings and was definitely the runt of the litter  I should have known there would be an issue with him (he's deaf,) but I wasn't going to change my mind at that point! Lucky for him that he was a beautiful colour lol!

The others were all eating from the same bowl that Wilberforce was standing in. So I probably would have chosen him, as he seemed a bit 'special' :D

Chlo licked my toes when I went to see her (wearing flipflops!) and that was that, im afraid!

She was the last one left - already gone to a home once - 2nd floor flat - can you imagine!!!!!

Out of a litter of ten I had the choice of eight - one was being retained by the breeders and one little bitch puppy wasn't drinking properly and the breeders wouldn't put her up for 'sale' until they were happy that she was feeding well on her own and put on some weight.

They were all adorable - little, fat squiddy, pointers, all boys except for the one little bitch and all black and white with that unmissable puppy smell !! I sat on the floor with them, the breeder brought me a cup of tea and said I could stay there and play for as long as I wanted !! she probably thought she would never get rid of me ! My little pup I choose as he was floppy, playful , bold , nicely marked and loved me tickling his belly. Very hard choice but oh what fun I had that day - that was now 18yrs ago and the same little fat, squiddy pointer is still here, very wobbly on his feet, has quite a few lumps and bumps but is still happy wandering around the yard ! I love him so much still !!
