i have spoken to my loan horses owner today, and she has decided to run the agreement for another 6 months then would like him back.
I always knew it was not a long term loan, but its hard to think he will be going in spetember.
obviously his "real" mummy wants him back, (i had him on loan due to her personal circumstances) but ive created such a bond.
I know thats the deal with loaning, but it still hits hard when they want their horse back.
So im thinking now that my next loan horse i advertise for will clearly state long term loan wanted!
so I will be horsey hunting again around july/august time for my next competition horse.
would just like to hear others experiences of when their loan horse went back, and how you went forwards really.

I found when i had another horse to ride the day my loan horse went i wasnt as bothered!! yeah i was upset but i found it so much easier!!, if you can afford to have another horse for a month before he goes back then do it, however i got bought my horse after loaning!!, i could not go through it again, why dont you look at buying your own if you want to long term loan?

the initial out lay of buying the horse is the problem for me, i can afford to keep, and compete a horse, just not the initial outlay.
i have heard many succesful loan stories on long term loans, where the owners are happy for the horse to stay for the rest of its days.
i knew this horse was not long term, and as much as you try not to get attached you still do! suppose its just one of lifes lessons!

Aww thats fair enough :), i hope you find something just as nice as your boy now i am sure you will :), what about looking at ex racers i know they will go on permenant loan and off course they dont want them back? i know a couple of people who have 2 ex racers of which are on permenant loan :),

enjoy the next few months with him and look forward to getting another challenge :)

I've had a few loans for about 6 monthish at a time, my last loan horse went back in May...tbh I don't handle it well and I am gagging for another horse! But I am at uni so am waiting until afterward. There are lots of horses out there that may be offered to long term/permanent loans, I am saving the money I would spend on keeping a loan horse to afford the initial outlay of buying!

your so right, im gonna enjoy him whilst he is here, and im on waiting lists for ex racers (the boy i have on loan came from a re-homing centre also so i know what im taking on). ill be contacting lots of people in the next few days!

Terribly... I was in floods of tears, I am pretty sure the entireity of my old yard saw me purple in the face and sobbing...

I didn't get another loan, and hope I won't have to again so I am in complete control of the horse at all times. I now share a horse which is working wonderfully because I still get my "fix" but I know that it is for as long as it takes me to find another horse!

I had a loan horse for 5 years. You can imagine the bond we had. During that time she had a tendon injury, which I nursed her through, only to have the owner take her back as soon as she was sound...

I bit the bullet and bought my horse. I couldn't go through that again.

I was very lucky, when Friendly went back, I was very upset. But I asked her breeder/owner for first refusal if she ever came up for sale and then I started saving, just incase! Four years later, my dream came true and she came back to me for good!
