I went out driving about to see what I could find as I had been told about 3 or 4 different yards in the same area, drove down a windy road next to OH's house and ended up at a lovely yard I didnt know existed, which is cheap and is really out of the way. He dosent advertise so would never have found it without knocking on his door.
I've got mine at home, but when they were on livery I used to have to move around a lot so I would just drive around in an area I liked and stop when I saw horses. Horsey people are usually very friendly and happy to send you in the direction of the nearest livery yard.
I am looking for a yard at the moment and am finding there are alot of yards that you only hear about by word of mouth.
Seen some lovely ones and more to go and see from posting on here and getting recommendations.
All the best ones seem to be full so am putting myself on waiting lists but because of this they are happy to tell you about other yards in the area.
I also found a good website called transport direct where you can put in addresses or postcodes and it tells you times and distance by car and possible public transport routes.
I used yell.com, and also drove about the village that I had recently moved too, I was lucky that there were 2 yards about 3 mins from my house in different directions, but they were full so ended up going to one 12 mins drive away, which is small but the YM's knowledge and experience by far outweighs the hassle of the longer drive. Good Luck!
Used to go to competitions there, considered moving there with the previous horse but didn't think it would be right for her, now I've got a new one we thought we'd give it a try as the competitions made it convenient - no need to use the lorry! Now I just wished we'd moved the mare there instead, and maybe we'd still have her! Grr. Ah well, you live and learn.
i asked on here if anyone new of good but not busy livery in the area & got a pm from a member that has a small feild to herself. now there is just her 3 & mine and its fantastic better than i would ever have imagined.
The first yard I moved him to was through word of mouth, then one that advertised in the local horse magazine, and the one I'm moving to soon I found online.
Googled in March 2008 when I was budgeting for buying my new horse. Happened to come across an advert for a yard near me opening April 2008! Good facilities so had my new horse delivered to me on the opening day of the new yard so we were one of two liveries to move in on the opening day! Had the choice of 28 out of 30 stables to pick from.

1st yard was found through word of mouth as I remembered talking to a lady about 2 years before I got my horses who told me about a yard where she kept her horse. Two months before I got the lads I took a drive down there with oh. Liked the place and asked them to hold two stables for me which they did. Needless to say I soon filled them.
Second yard I went to again was via word of mouth. I had heard of the yard but after doing the Xmas SE ride at Apedale I rode back with a lady who was to become a friend and her sister kept horses there. I found out where the yard was after visiting it to collect some horse items that were being donated for the Operation Esther appeal as I was the collector in the area. Two months after the appeal I had decided to leave my first yard and so had a better look around the place before I moved.
Third place, not a yard as it was a couple of stables and some fields, was again word of mouth. I don't drive and as I am a chatty person lol I got talking to a man on a bus who asked me if I knew anyone who wanted some stables and land ( as I told him I had horses). I went to have a look at the place and decided to move the horses there. As I don't drive, as with the first two yards most of my visits to the yards when my horses were there were either by bus and walking or else walking alone.
It didn't work out at the fields so I looked around and didn't have much luck until I happened to notice an ad in a pet shop for a livery yard. I went to look at the yard and it was literally just down the road from where I lived so I moved them there.
My present yard though was found by good old yellow pages lol. I did know of the yard though as I knew someone who used to be there and also I have a friend at a nearby yard to it who had mentioned it as well. Of all the yards it is the furthest away and takes me 45 mins to reach by foot. But both me and the horses are settled there now
So to OP there are yards and places out there and not being able to drive isn't too much of a problem.
Apart from the first yard I have had to catch a bus or walk to every yard or place I have visited.
You could try looking in local tack shops like people have already said. If you can't get to them then why not ring them and ask if there are any suitable adverts in there, or whether they will place an advert in the shop for you?
Otherwise there are a few websites you can try. New Rider has a section you can post in. You can ask on here. Or maybe place an advert on stabletalk ( it's free). If you have any horsey friends then why not send them a text and ask them to have a look for you.
Other than that it is a case of trying to be as mobile as you can really and having a look around. It all depends on what you want. DIY/livery, yard or just land and/or stables etc. If there are any farms near you then why not seek them out and either visit them or make a few phonecalls, you just never know? Likewise why not try calling a few feed or hay/haylage or bedding suppliers, especially farmers as they may know of yards to try which may not necessarily advertise to joe public. Same goes in asking farriers too, since they visit yards as well.
Anything is worth a shot really.
Good luck
