While googling Akhal Teke horses, I wondered to myself "How do people end up with these horses?"

So I guess not just rare breeds, but "cool" breeds.
Thoroughbreds, cobs and the like seem to be 10 a penny.

How did you get your rare/interesting breed?

I have an American Bashkir Curly too! Bought him as a 6 month old from his breeder in Dorset, who had imported him in utero. Picked a Curly because we met a lovely one at Your Horse Live.

do Exmoors count? I had one as a kid in the 70s. Roll on 25 years and I went riding on the Dick Vet Exmoor ponies. a few years later a work colleague has 2 and they reminded me how awesome they are-I got one as a companion and then a while later, a weanling as a riding pony for me (he's now coming up for 5).

The lusitanos-went on a riding holiday in Portugal to get over a break up, hadn't really heard of them before-rode them all week. even after riding TBs and WBs all through my 20s, never believed riding a horse could feel like *that*! 3 years later bought an imported 3yo (although actually went looking for a Section D!). He was sadly put down last year, then bought a 2yo lusitano in Portugal and he comes over this spring.

I bought my first part bred cleveland bay to event he was such a character that was the start of my love for clevelands.
When i bought Jack i didnt even know CB were rare but i liked the stamp of horse he was an vowed that when the time came i would replace him with another PB/CB the rest is history
I now have 2 part breds and 3 pures
and foals are planned
You can never have to many
HE HE !
