Captain was paid for in cash, Fany with a building society cheque. I like these cheques 'cos they are as good as cash ( money taken straight out) but are safer, if you lose it they will cancel and refund it. Also free unlike bankers cheques.
First horse was from a dealer and they wanted cash (had to send horse back as wasnt as described). Tia I bought privately and paid cash for the deposit then bank transfer for the rest.
Cash nearly every time, although I was more than a little worried walking out of the bank with that money! Last time was by transfer into sellers bank account as she delivered him to me and lived a way away..
have turned up to find a chunk missing.. having recounted god knows how many times.. frantic call back to the yard and lovely groom checked my car and found it on the car floor - she cycled to the nearest bank, banked it for me and then I drew it out immediately from a branch near by..... in a horsebox..!
I paid the deposit by cheque, but that was 2 weeks before I picked him up as I was on holiday. The balance was paid via a guaranteed building society cheque.
Don't have horses any more and can'y honestly remember how the ones I had were paid for. The last one being PTS 8yrs ago - I had him for 10yrs, so we are talking 18yrs ago.
But if I were in the market I would pay either by building society cheque or bankers draft as either can not be issued unless the money is in the account. The money (how I understand it) is then allocated as soon as cheque issued so can not be spent.
That way I could hand over cheque when picking up horse - the seller would be confident that the cheque would not bounce and have record of sale from cheque being issued.
Would not feel comfortable doing a bank transfer unless it could be done via the phone at the sellers yard - even then if they bank with a different bank to you the transfer can take a few days, oooh nooo would not feel good about that - them having my money AND my horse.
Should I be selling a horse, I wouldn't accept a bank draft or building society cheque due to the large number of forgeries. I have always bought and sold with either cash or internet bank transfer.
