Matty is a ridgeback with Australian lineage so Mattilda seemed an obvious choice. Dexter was named after a barman in Grenada because they are both big, black and gorgeous. As he has grown up though I wish I had called him Bear 'cos he is so cuddly. Sage was already named so no choice there.
Our first rottie was called Holly because we got her at Christmastime. When we picked her up and told the breeder what we were going to call her she was amazed. She was the spitting image of her mum who was called Molly and they had been calling her Molly2!!
Our cat is callled Gabriella after Sabbatini. Very appropriate as it is shortened to Gaby and she never shuts up.

His posh name is Hogan's Hooch....my favourite 'hooch' is Jack Daniels......Jack for short

When we lost our old collie Spot my parents (who we rent our flat off) said no more dogs for a while so a week later i turned up with a collie puppy and because my dads nickname is Flossy i named our puppy after my dad to soften the blow so hence Floss the dog.

OH and I had decided we would call our puppy Arnie (after Arnold Schwarzeneggar!), however it just didn't fit when Otto arrived, so we tried to think of something else.
Nothing suited until my Mum suggested Otto. However, if anyone asks we say he is named after Otto Mann from The Simpsons

Our next dog is going to be named Quimby, after Mayor Quimby (and Fred Quimby, the producer of the best Tom & Jerry cartoons)

You know I'm not totally sure! Tilly I remember picking up a very frigtened young dog in a complete mess and driving her home on my own, I talked to her all the way in a soothing voice to try and keep her calm, running out of things to talk to her about I started chatting to her about what we were going to call her, by the time we arrived home me and her had somehow arrived at Tilly!
Ellie was a present from my ex OH not very long after my dog was stolen. To cut a long story short a man crashed in the night outside our house and my ex helped him and took him home. He arrived home at about 6am with a puppy and put her on the bed to wake me up. He was determined she should be called crasher! By bizarre coincidence I had picked her at 3 weeks old from a litter and then backed out because I decided to keep a pup out of the next litter I had planned from the bitch that was stolen a few weeks later. 4 weeks later the breeders husband crashed outside our house and my ex picked the same puppy from the litter that were now 7 weeks...should have called her fate really!! Ex however called her crasher for weeks, after much arguing Ellie was the only other thing I could get him to agree to. If she had been a dog we would have stuck with crasher though!
Milo just looks like a milo! I named him instantly when I saw him!
Flora I arrived at after much debate (including on here and people telling me it made them think of margarine!

) I dunno it suited her and I wanted another natural name because our last vizz was Acorn and also it has hungarian origin.

Highly embarrassing confession: It took me and the OH nearly a year to realise we were calling our spangle by different names
blush.gif

The rescue centre had named her Jilly - so that's her official name (insurance, vet etc) However, OH has a brain roughly the size of a conker so he started calling her Tilly (after one of his childhood labs)
smirk.gif
Hasn't confused her too much though! She responds to both...(and Millie Vanilli on occasion
blush.gif
) so I think it's probably the tone rather than what we're actually calling her....daft spangle.

Still embarrassing though

Leah was already named, so I didn't get to choose. She had originally been called Lala, after the Teletubbie, in her old home (nasty home

) but the centre staff renamed her, and chose Leah because it didn't sound too different for her to get used to.

When we went for my two collies (we only wanted one) I had already picked the name which was Mika. Mika had been named Flyn so Mika got swapped from Flyn to Mika and we just had to take the one girl to keep him company so she was called Flyn.

So that's how Mika andFlyn came about. Unfortunately people cant get their heads around the boy is Mika and the girl is Flyn.

That doesn't make a lot of sense does it?

Cyrus came about as OH favorite film character is Cyrus the Virus from Con Air

Diablo came about as his breeder said he was the little devil of the litter if there was trouble to be found he`d find it

Loco came about as our none sled dog friends thought we where crazy getting number three and wanted to stick to the spanish theme
smile.gif

When I went to be chosen by Sweep he had no name and their were waiting for their Kennel Club registarations to come back but he just looked like Sweep - ash grey body etc with black ears and making cute squeaky noises!!
smile.gif
When he came home we did try Badger for about half an hour (due to white stripe on his head) but he ignored us
blush.gif
- came to Sweep every time!

His 'proper' name is Tahiti Tom

Sooty the cat - well what else do you call a big black cat (well was a tiny black kitten at the time
smile.gif
...) when you have a dog called Sweep?

As for Max - well the The Moo came with his name but also responds well to other terms of endearment......

My two were just given their show names, not wild about Bodo but it would have been silly to change it at his age. The name 'Bella' was actually rejected and got sent back as 'Beauty' BLEURGH!!!!!!!!

Nanci came with her name as well (OBVIOUSLY!) and Dexy ('Natasha' - don't think so) was after Dexy's Midnight Runners. Her daughter Enya was after the singer, Jenna and Juno (Beatrix - again, no!) were my nan's idea, Spider was black and scuttly, and my Mum thought Sweeney (Ensign) and Regan (ANITA!!!)was hilarious....their son Zep had an awesome name
smile.gif

We had a Boss and a Bonny from Juno, one went to the cops and the other was sold up the street.

Scub's real name is Bugsy but he has a habit of not listening out on walks and I hate shouting Bugsy!, Scubs sounds slightly better
smile.gif

his kennel name is something like Bayhood retrevier or something, we never use it,
smile.gif

if I ever get another puppy that I can name I think I'd pick Dylan.

grin.gif

Well Hillfiger Butterfly Dream is a bit of a mouthful, she was called Cadbury when hubby got her but he didn't like that and LB just seemed to fit - it's short for Little Bitch!

Must say like most dogs she seems to answer to most things though.

I wondered if Scubs was originally called Scooby, because my pony Scooby often gets shortened to Scubs (from Scoobs, to Scubs, to Scubber-dubs... it's horrifying how contrived a name can get!).

The very first stallion I rode was a beautiful huge paint boy at my friends ranch in america called Beau! I was absolutely terrified of riding a stallion as I had never done it before.

He looked after me superbly, the next day we went calf rangling for the first time (my first time not his) and again looked after me first time!

Everything I did on him he looked after me and we had a great time with me have lots of "1sts" with him! therefore when my BF bought me my dog for my 21st (my first ever dog EVER) I thought aha! I know what name goes with my great enjoyable 1sts!!!

Suits him down to a tea!
smile.gif

I wanted to call Chloe Darcey (as in, Darcey Bussell the ballet dancer) but my OH point blank refused and Chloe was the only thing we could agree on!

But she mostly gets called Chlo, Pups, Puppy, Puppydog...all of which she responds to!

xxxxx

Ours are named after old gundogs of my grands
smile.gif
Currently have Cindy, Tina and Tess (Beastie) although the original Tess was a yellow lab, not a schnauzer.

After my Granda died, we took on the 'original' Cindy and Tina who were mother and daughter
smile.gif

Quite freakishly, the 'original' Tina was blind and my Tina has only one eye and is losing sight in her remaining eye

Renamed the first rescue as he didn't have a clue what his name was, Australian bloke with no manners and rather forward with the ladies, without much introduction! Had to be Digger! Then along came the second one, Bluey. All I need now is a Bruce!

Dakota came with his name from his prior owner who surrendered him to a beagle rescue I volunteered with (he was the foster dog who never left). He was four and we debated changing it but he had (has) a lot of behavioural issues from not being socialised so we didn't want to make him get used to a new name as well as dealing with new surroundings at the same time.

Bella was "Mrs Beagle" in the shelter she came from and was given to the same rescue we got Dakota from for them to adopt her out. The rescue changed her name to Bella which we kept.

Finally, Willie. The shelter we got him from had named him "Steamboat" (he was a stray) and we couldn't see calling him that when calling him in from the garden or back on a walk ... so we added "Willie" and he became Steamboat Willie. Of course we only call him by both names when he is in trouble ...

We picked Hugo as my step-dad didnt want another dog so decided we needed to pick something he likes and his fave aftershave in Hugo Boss.
Digger was meant to be called Dexter but it didnt suite him when we got him home at all as he is blind in one eye and very stupid so we wanted to keep it along the same lines so changed it to Digger. Couldnt of picked a better name for him.

Jazz was already named when I was given him but Daisy (my little rescue was originally called Lucky - more like Unlucky as she had been rehomed about 4 times before she came to me and we have normally gone with Flowers/Plants for names for the dogs. We considered Ivy but my Stepdad didn't like it so she became Daisy (which was also his nickname when he was in the Navy)

Poppy was Puppy until she was a year old because we couldn't decide on a name for her, by that time we couldn't change it radically.

Boston is officially Ash Rac Magnettawan Truth be Told (for Heaven's sakes!) he didn't have a name planned either, but as his Uncles and Aunts belonging to friends all had place names as names we went that way. We love Boston (US) so Boston he became,we later discovered a village just down the road from here also called Boston.

The GSD puppies were named after Queen Victoria's children as they were born on Victoria Day. (Albert, Alice and Trixie)

Rip, the Bouvier x, that came with the farm (or the farm came with him) was already called that.

I once re-named a rescue greyhound Panther (he was Blackie
crazy.gif
) - because he was huge, black and wanted to kill everything he could get his teeth around. Oddly enough his registered name went along with the big cat theme, he was Timmy's (I think) Tiger.
