How difficult/expensive is it to build a sand school?

I was wondering if anyone knew about the process of getting a sand school laid? How do you prepare the ground and what should be used as a base?
I keep toying with the idea of having one put in at home but the ground is seriously rocky and hard.

DIY you can probably build one for £10k, a decent one but a lot of work
Buying one you are probably looking at £15-20k

NB if using sand make absolutely sure (and get it in writing) that it is silica sand, as this has rounded grains which are safe for horses. Sand with angular grains, like builders sand, can scratch and make your horses feet very sore and should not be used). Great for making cement but not for sandpits or maneges!

Depends... when I had mine put in, there was room for it in the garden so it didn't need planning. Didn't want it there tho... wanted it in one of the fields, so it DID need planning as it was change of use. One of our fields had a grazing covenant on it which also had to be lifted.

Whatever you do, MAKE SURE YOUR MEMBRANE IS PROPERLY LAID!!! The company which put in mine did nothing whatsoever to secure the membrane edges (it is laid across widthways in strips) and now ALL the edges have worked their way up, the whole thing is an almighty trip hazard & I'm in the process of getting quotes for it to be fixed.

My stone base is also far from level, explaining why the school has ridden deep & shallow at the same time! The person who installed it has now gone out of business, so I can't make them fix it.
 
Oh no, that sounds like a nightmare. I hope it doesn't cost too much for you to get it fixed.

I live in Spain, and there are about a trillion planning laws, but no one ever seems to pay any attention to them so I will have to investigate.
