I am reading this and laughing my head off! I have just bought a gelding.... having owned mares all my life..... and this has been one of my burning questions!
He gets it out quite often and it looks very clean (not touched it in the 9 weeks owned him) so I am going with the leave it alone policy unless I have to!
A lady at the yard keeps cleaning her horses as he gets an infection it it at least once a week it starts to smell bad (and it does smell extremely bad!!) and then swells up if she doesn't clean it. So glad my new horse doesn't have that problem!
