Odd question I know. I have a post in the stolen and missing section about Ben, A standardbred.
His previous owner had him for four months, but claims his passport has gone missing.
My Vet scanned Ben today and he has two microchips inserted.

I have called PetID and also entered the chip numbers into the National Equine Database, but nothing!

How can I trace the chips back to the implanter that purchased them? The chips are both UK.

You need to call petlog as well, they might be able to tell you the manufacturer of the chip & then you can ring the manufacturer. It may well be that the chips have never been registered and hence 2 separate passports are lurking around??

This is the opposite of my problem so maybe someone can help me too.

My big horse was chipped as a foal when we bought her, they had their vaccs this last week and the vets scanned both horses, my tb came up with the chip, big horse chip no-where to be found. I have checked with another scanner and again tb's chip comes up, no trace of big horses chip. apparently a duplicate chip with same ID number cannot be made and inserted, so do I have to pay for a whole new chip? What will happen to her passport which has the original chip number recorded etc etc? the vets are currently looking into it for me but I'm a bit worried where her chip is!

Chips moving in big horses or horses that have big developed necks is not uncommon. You will end up with both chips recorded in the passport

When any animal is chipped the vet fills in a form and that will have that particular vet/vets company number on the form, each vet practice has a code number given to them, you can ring petlog etc and ask them re this number, they should have a record of which practice did it.

Each implanter has their own unique code which has to be put onto the form.
With the chip that has either moved or is not working. If it is not working then it should be replaced for free by the company of the original chip (ie petlog or identichip).

Also no a replacement chip with the same number can not be made it will have a second chip implanted & both numbers recorded on the passport.

The chips nowadays have a special coating to make them bond to the surrounding area to help prevent them from migrating but accidents to happen.
