Always, she seems to waver.

I try to imagine a tunnel and push her down it. (though I am currently imagining a black hole in which to push her)

She is fine with guidelines (i.e poles on the ground) but left to her own devices she staggers about like an irishman on st patrick's day... (well, not quite but she's about as straight as Dale Winton)

I even tried long reining this morning and I couldn't keep her straight.

Do you think someone is slipping gin into her feed?

ETA - she has no conformation faults that would make her walk funny - I think she just does it for a laugh. Any tips?

Trot?

Sorry, I was being facetious but then it made me think that doing a transition up, and then down, and only staying in walk for as many steps/strides as she can keep straight for. I think straightness in every pace always comes from riding forward.

Maybe more leg? Are you sitting straight? Even pressure by legs/hands? Is she in front of your leg?

More leg = I will pass out

Me straight = Yes, provided no gin involved
Even pressure = um, she resists as much as I push - does that count?
Infront of leg = questionable......?

She naps a bit so think this is part of the problem.
In trot she is straight - she just doesn't seem to have mastered walking properly (I don't think she can be bothered) she does it in the field too. silly horse

I bet it would help if she was thinking more forward then and in front of your leg. Mine is really wobbly in walk unless I virtually pass out from leg application, so iI know the feeling! Maybe trying loads and loads of walk - halt - walk transitions would kep her thinking? So she doesn't get a chance to wobble!

Is she young?

If so it maybe that she hasnt got enough muscle to enable her to walk in a straight line.

I know it sounds silly but i would do lots of circles serpentines etc. to build up muscle and then work on the straight lines

I have the same problem with my youngsters and this is what i have to do to straighten them up

Havw you tried, getting a line of bailing twine, boout 10 meters long and putting it on the ground striaght, then trying to get her to walk with two feet either side, it will give you some guideloines, but not her so much, as she wont be able to see it so well, unlike a pole. Then youll be able to tell exactly when she goes woky, and see if you can figure out why
mabye...i do it with my driving ponies

all good suggestions thanks!

Yes she is young but she has plenty of muscle - I really do think she is lazy/bakwards thinking in walk. Will try all of the above

wish me luck!

Good luck! Arwen! This post caught my eye because I have just the same problem! Spend every schooling session overanalysing myself.

Defintely going to try the string thing and am already working on lots of circles.

My legs will ache in empathy with yours :-)
