As title really! We have a Ifor Williams 510 trailer but could use a lorry if really needed?

Bandages or boots? Loose or tied?

I'm assuming its not had much handling so personally i'd go without bandages or boots and travel loose, maybe you could tie up if it had already been taught to tie up and was reasonably experienced but if not it's not really the time or the place to teach it and the same for the leg protection really, more likely to freak it out and cause problems than solve them.

Edited to add - I'd rather use a trailer with little ones, as its a much less steep ramp.

I stood in the back of the lorry with my foal when he returned from stud and he travelled fab, have travelled foals loose in trailers too before with no problems.

I bought an unhandled 2yo off the field last April.
We travelled home in an Ifor Williams trailer, loose, with no partition, no boots/bandages, and had the top ramp doors shut, so she wouldn't entertain the prospect of escape.
Our journey was a good hour and she didn't move at all.

Good luck and enjoy!

If at all possible, have another horse in the trailer/lorry - a nice, grown up calming influence - if Dobbin next door is taking it in his/her stride it can only help the foal to realise that it's harmless! I'd tie up if the foal is used to being tied, but no boots or bandages - 1 thing too many to cope with! If possible, try and get foaly shut in a stable or lorry/trailer for a couple of minutes for a few times in the preceeding days... good luck!

Shes very used to being handled, I think we would probably succeed with bandages. The journey is about 3 hours which is whyI'm worried about her travelling wtihout anything on =[

Would happily travel in the back of a lorry but wouldnt travel in trailer with her. Not sure whether shes been tied already I'll ask xxxx

travel her loose in the trailer my foal travelled over 4 hours loose when i brought her home she was fine.

Travel loose without leg bandages etc

Also NEVER tie up a foal! Your foal needs to have his/her head down when ever it needs to to drain the mucus in its lungs (a normal thing all horses do) failure to do so will induce pleuropneumonia known as shipping fever.

Loose, no bandages or boots, partitions and breast bar out!
Also if you put straw down on the floor of the trailer, the likelyhood is that baby will lie down once its got used to the motion.
H travelled 3 hours back to ours at four and a half months old totally naked and loose in the trailer. He survivied :)

On it's own, Loose, no boots or bandages but with a cheap leather headcollar. no partition or breast or breach bar, all top doors shut but roof vent open, plenty of straw down. I've found it good to stack a couple of bales of straw in the nose of the trailer to prevent foal from standing in the nose.. also acts as a 'buffer' for the foal. foal will most likely turn to face backwards and you may hear a comotion just as you pull off while he's turning round but after that I wouldn't be supprised if you don't hear a peep.
