How do I get rid of terrible Screech from Digital Tachograph?

We have an 2010 Iveco 75E16 Horsebox, which for our use is tacho exempt. The issue we have is that the unit emits a very loud and penetrating screech for 2 or 3 mins after starting. This is obviously to warn the driver that no driver's card is inserted.

I have tried disconnecting it = no crank , no start!

I have tried wrapping the enclosure with tape = hardly makes any difference!

Has anyone ever had theirs silenced? If so, how?

Many thanks in advance

Thanks for reply. But I doubt the engine would start then.

I have tried disconnecting the (Blaupunkt) tacho. The engine would not then crank, presumably due to not receiving a signal from the unit. There must be a method of removing the screech, as hundreds of 7.5T horseboxes must be running this level of Tachograph. Or their drivers are very deaf .

Thanks for suggestion - bit of an "oops" here, its a VDO one, so will be contacting them. I will be sure to report back here of any findings.

Interim report back. I phoned VDO Technical and the chap was very helpful. The solution, which has yet to be fully evaluated due to the lock-down, is to disconnect just one wire from the back of the Tachograph. I will report back when I am fully certain this works.

Interesting and thanks for reporting back! Mine had a retrofitted "key" (pin in a hole!) that had been used by someone in the past to disable the tacho ... So clearly a common issue.

Finally solved this issue. It was not the digital VDO tachograph making the screeching sound. It was some electronic tracking device hidden in the roof space near the tachograph getting upset. Removed all of that equipment and the screech is gone. Ironically found it when I had the tachograph calibrated.
