A kind of treeless idea I have that I've put a lot of thought and research into and I think it could work... Except there's no way I've the ability to put it together! Do I just contact a saddlery?
Thanks 😄

If you've invented something then you need to get a patent to stop other people stealing your idea. I dont know the ins and outs but its worth spending some time googling it

It's almost impossible to patent a saddle, you may have a unique component that is able to be patented, but even a unique flap design can't be patented, hence you see copes of designs all over the internet. I would proceed with caution, I know little about product development but Walsall can be a hot bed of copyists, so I'd be approaching a specialist agency, there must be a Govt arm that advises on technical new product development, how to fund it, how to protect your intellectual property. I'd at least get some advice before taking the first step towards a manufacturer.

Interesting point about the IP.

if you really have the next world beater, it's worth protecting the IP if you can - but that is going to be hard work and expensive. Very.

In any case, so many saddles sell not just on what do they do but how they are marketed so it can be key to think that through - and build a REALLY good network of fitters. So many brands fall totally flat on that.

But as a first step, cheapest might be to find someone who is up for the project then get them to sign a restrictive agreement. A decent IP lawyer should be able to knock one up for a couple of hundred quid - as it sounds as though you don't want to get into the making yourslel, the prospect of getting the manufacturing contract will be a pretty good carrot to be good and not steal the idea.

It's weird trade by all accounts. Actually going to Walsall and knocking on doors may not be the worst idea!
