How do I prevent Foot Abscesses ?

Quite a few horses in my yard have abscesses on their feet at the moment. It is quite wet in the fields and quite a few of them are out 24 / 7 . Is there anything I can do to prevent it happening to us ? Apart from the obvious of keeping hoof clean , should I buy supplements ?? we are in at night / in bad weather .
 
If your horse doesn't usually suffer with them thank your lucky stars and keep your fingers crossed!! I think generally, keep the diet well balanced and at less than 5% sugar and starch and maintain good hoof hygiene. It's worth having a stock of nappies for poulticing and some vet wrap and duct tape just in case and hopefully you won't have to use them!!

Your horses may have a copper deficiency ,look on the site FORAGE PLUS there is a story about a horse called Teddy 2 shoes who had many abscesses .
 
Pet observation of mine

When we were in two larger livery yards - the horses who tended to get and take longest to recover from them, often had molassed licks or molassed feeds.

Low sugar diet if you can, good supplements. Try Sarah at ForagePlus, but there is also Ross and Mel at Pro Earth. Both good, bit one of them sends you goodies with your order ;) I got a bag of Werthers last time. :)

I got a curly wurly once :D was so happy....now my brother races me to the parcel to see which sweetie is in there :D
