How do I sell my beloved 3yo

Any suggestions guys on how to sell my 3yr old sports horse... is it just the time of year, the market place..his age??? He is stunning, a gentleman, backed, easy, talented jumping and flat and is show quality..... thats him in his first county show this year... am stumped, running out of money and desperate to sell

Horsequest, locally, cant afford H&H at moment as I have one horse I bought to bring on which has had huge vets bills and the youngster is at present out at grass, Im in big trouble come winter and he's far too good to loan out!

Did first County class this year, 3rd out of 15 South Suffolk, had been dragged out of field, bathed and put in ring, he's a good doer and had been shown as a yearling and is soooo quiet to handle, bless, all that noise and horses and he didnt bat an eyelid

£5500 as also jumps, good flatwork, hacks etc
 
where are you based?? A friend is having the same issues, but looking at your photo (bit blurred) you could be my friend!

PS - everybody - he is exactly as she describes, a total star of a horse, will make somebody a good'n'
 
He sounds nice. How's he bred and how big is he expected to make?
You say he is hacking, schooling and jumping - personally this would put me off buying a 3yo. The most I would have expected him to have done is been backed and lightly ridden away.
I think for the asking price of £5500 he is going to have to be something super

by the way, why arent you out selling!!!!
 
He has hacked alone yes, because you have to have from one yard to the other to get to the rubber menage!

He has jumped (lightly) over some fenced just to see how he behaved, and he was amazing... then stopeed, I dont want my youngsters legs ruined, he's been turned away now since Feb, but one person came to see him and was going to buy til her horse fractured its hock, we dragged him out of the field (for her benefit) and he was sat on without any problems for her to try... thats how nice he is!!!

Totally see what your saying, but he hasnt be over ridden, he;s far too good for that

He's expected to make 16.2hh and is IDxTB and yes he is a real event prospect so he is worth the asking price I think... it is slightly open to negotiation to right home.
 
LOL LOL took him to his first county show in hand in May.........missed that trick.... am going to try local saddlerys, vets, my dressage trainers comp days, feed merchants etc... not alot else I can do.. dont want to over show him, he's essentially an event prospect, dressage, or I guess if someone wanted to show seriously he'd be great for ridden classes

All ideas greatfully tried!
 
I wouldn't touch a 3yo that had done that much...but I'm sure some people aren't as fussy as me

I think there is a market for all horses at the right price - so either your adverts aren't reaching the market (Horse and Hound might be an investment if you sell him), or you are asking too much.

What did the dam and sire do competition wise?

It's always difficult to sell youngstock, and it's a buyers market. If you shop around you can find something really quite nice for 3.5/4 K
 
Have you tried adhorse? They get a lot of traffic, and I found my lovely boy on there.

FWIW - I would be totally honest about the amount of jumping etc he's done - I too would be put off an ad stating a 3 year old has been jumping well. But as you said above, you've only done a little - some event type would prob go for that, but still too much work on a youngster for my liking... Also think he might be slightly over-priced - I guess it depends how desperate you are to sell!
 
read previous thread, to be backed properly he has to have been hacked as too much circles in schools is more damage than walking quietly out on roads! jumping a couple of x poles is hardly too doing too much... its more his natural technique that is impressive not height or quantity but quality!

He just needs a loving home, I dont want him ruined either, I have owned him since 5mths old and am forced to sell
 
It may help if you get him out more into the showing circuit, word spreads etc, if he everything you say he is then you may get more genuine interest if people see him in the flesh rather than just seeing the price on an advert if you get what I mean.

You say he is far too good to loan, not sure what you mean by this..? but I'm sure there are a lot of good homes out there, showing yards that will take very good care of your boy and compete him successfully if he has got a lot of potential, then at least it helps you with your money situation more that it would do by not selling him at all or taking a long process in doing so and paying for advertising etc...plus you might get a sale through doing that or you could have him back if your finances changed for the better etc, just my thoughts.

Thank you, he is a total poppet... the sire is Bazaars Texas (coloured stallion)... (dallas line) and the dam is Kind of Diamonds line so mostly eventing and showjumping.

Alot of his offspring have done well showing at HOYS etc

I appreciate what you are saying...but I personally would never buy a 3yo that had been backed and ridden away. Their skeletal growth, is, in my opinion, not up to ridden work at that age.
I suspect many people feel this way - and would rather buy an untouched youngster to break the way they want, than something that has been worked over jumps etc....and as a three year old, you can't do that much with them - due to minimum age requirements of disciplines.
Good luck with selling him - he sounds nice.

What I mean is that I would be very cautious about resorting to loaning out to solve the financial stress as I have taken great care to produce a very well balanced, trusting, youngster who has great potential and I would hate for anyone to take him on and undo all my hard work and patience ....does that make sense?
 
thank you.. I take everyones comments on board, hence the posting on here... to get opinions. Perhaps I need to re-do my add so that he doesnt sound like he has been over done... many thanks for taking the time to reply xxx
 
I'd take the 'jumping' bit out of the advert as well, that would certainly put me off. I would say lightly backed, taken everything in his stride, easy trainable temperament and state his show results if he has them. Also, think he's a bit pricey in today's climate, I'd reduce to 4.5K and see if you have any response

`good flatwork at 3` i would not want,but a little walk to the end of the drive and back with someone on would be ok imo.
 
Try the pony club website - a friend of mine sold her 3yr old on there earlier this year as a PC/RC prospect. He was sold to a 15 yr old to use once her horse retired next summer (she keeps in touch with them).

As you can probably gather I am a good friend of Ladyofthe Garrison and would like to add that i've known the horse for a good year or more. When she says he has hacked jumped etc, she really does mean in a very light way. He was professionaly backed by a very reputable eventer and then turned away.
As somebody who backed there horse as a 3 year old, i would say it depends on the horse as to when backing starts. Agreed, for some its too young, for others, such as mine and this chap it was the right time. They weren't rushed, pressured and were comfortable with everything that was done to them. In my case my boy contuninued with his education, he was mentally and physically dealing extremely well, if at any point he wasn't my instuctor, who has many years experience, would have pointed it out to me and I would have noticed and we would have stopped. I don't see the problem with lightly backing a 3yo and turning away. It has obviously come across wrong from LadyoftheGarrison and sounds as though hes been over done, so maybe a rethink of the ad would be wise. Price - well horses and houses are worth what somebody wants to pay, i'm glad i'm not selling, wouldn't have a clue! I think its worth weighing up livery bills/ads etc vs a reduction in price.

woods sounds like fun... of course transport is my downfall... due to unsellable youngster and overly tall dressage prospect... am still beaming after wednesday, have framed my results!
