Hi all,

i have just got a new bit on trial from the bit bank, does anyone know how i go about safely disinfecting it as its been worn by other horses?

thanks

If it's metal bung it in a pan of water on the stove and boil for a few minutes.

Alternatively you could stick it in the the dishwasher.

Or you could soak it in Milton.

I used Miltons. It's non toxic and originally for sterilising baby things so safe to use for horses :) I just leave the bit to soak in diluted Miltons and then run it under clean water before using it.

cant you use the stuff that you use to sterilize babies bottles?
and i would of thought bit bank would of done it themselves? :p

the bit bank recommend that although they do clean the bits they are not responsible for any cross contamination and state that you should always clean the it thorouhly b4 use....probably safe but wouldnt risk it would you?

milton sounds like a good idea!

I wash mine in a plastic bowl, put in some hot water and fairy liquid and clean it with a sponge and put in some disinfectant aswell if need be :)

Well with dentistry equipment...gags, rasps etc. We just use water and hibiscrub between horses. Sterlize every so often with Virkon.

Trigene is a good disinfectant - it kills just about every bug and lurgy - most vets use it to disinfect. I think you can buy a Trigene spray in places like petsmart now - you just spray it on, leave it for 10 minutes, and then rinse off thoroughly.

Dishwasher will clean it up pretty good - but Trigene will kill off bugs for sure, and much safer than Milton. Milton fumes are pretty nasty things

Small vote against dishwashers as especially the new ones don't get that hot. If bit is metal then you can go hotter than most modern (more environmentally friendly) washers. Otherwise one of the recommended disinfectants...
