hi,
ive been having problems with my horse whilst hacking, hes started to rear.
he only rears when hes hacking and he does it when I want him to stop. say if hes wanting to go off, I will try and make him stop but he ends up disagreeing with me and going up!
anyone got any suggestions??

First off rule out any pain by getting everything checked.

Then, if this is more of a pi$$y horse not wanting to stand for you, you need to approach it from another angle. Keeping asking him to stop and stand still will keep giving you the same result.

Instead...try doing it another way. For example, ask for a halt, then turn to face the other way almost immediately. Ask for another halt and turn back again and allow the horse to walk on. Don't get angry, don't hold the halt long enough to create a bad reaction and don't overdo this...just two or three times each hack. When the horse gets used to it, introduce a short halt after the second turn, then walk on. A few days after that, ask for a normal halt...as soon as the horse halts, count only one second then walk on and praise the hell out of the horse with all of the above. It won't be long before he has forgotten to rear and will accept longer halts. Just don't get angry or impatient. X

Horses usually go up due to rein contact. If you cab drop rein contact for a second as they gather themselves up, the horse may not go up at all or at least not as high. This doesn't solve the problem of the horse wanting to rear in the first place though.
