My JR is 9 months old. We have a huge problem with that he barks and howls when we go out, even if it is for 10 minutes!

We have tried leaving him for 5 minutes then coming back and leaving it longer. He was OK for a while, but has got back into the habit of howling and our neighbours are angry and we may have to get rid of him.

How can I stop him doing it? Do I get him another doggy friend? He has cats for company, but they come and go as they please.

Please help as we love our JR and don't want to get rid of him.

Thanks

Oh dear... like you i have 8 and half month old JRT too but he doesn't howl though... I do hope you get bottom of this and beable to keep him.... I am sure someone on the forum would give you better advice as i am no good at this kind of thing. good luck.

I am in hampshire too, where r u?

A doggy friend could help as he sees you as his pack and when you go out his pack is deserting him. (but having said that my neighbour has 3 and they all howl like wolves when she goes out!) Radio or TV left on could also help. Tire him out before you leave and give him a nice bone to chew? Is he crate trained? I don't use one but apparantly it helps them settle and feel secure. Lots of people on here can advise you how to start that up.

Just a suggestion have you heard of DAP?

What i did with my dog I always make sure he has water, been to toilet (i prefer to take him for at least 30 mins walk with bit of ball play) and put down a chew then leave without fuss, shut the door (he got open crate in the kitchen but i shut him in the kitchen) Neighbours had commented how quiet he is. when i come home he is very excited but i ignored him until he's calm then make fuss. I haven't used DAP with him but have one for the cat who practcially lives upstairs as she's very stressed out cat it seems to have helped her alot.

Does he only do this when u go out?

Could u get him used to being alone in the same part of the house u leave him when u go out.......when your still in the house.
So he does not feel that every time he is left in a specific room.....you are going to leave him.
As the above post mentioned its good to leave the radio/tv on so he cant hear you coming and going or outside noise that may distract him.
Also leave him long lasting treats/kong filled with goodies....something u could only give when u leave him alone.......so he can assosite the treat with his alone time.

Dogs that tend to spend alot of time with/around the owner and receive alot of attention......cope a little less well with being left.....u should try and get him used to a reduced amount of attention and encourage him to get used to being comfortable in his own company.....i.e in a different room to u/in his bed or on the floor as opposed to next to u on the chair or in your bed

......if he does that is

Also try not to make your enterance after a period of leaving he house an exciting one.....instead just let him straight out to the toilet....no contact/strokes or voice recognition......this way he will not assosiate your return as super exciting episode that he impatiently awaits.

Yep.....this is another reason crates are great.....I have a staffy pup in at the moment and because he is used to napping and sleeping in the crate over night he makes no fuss when I leave him in it to go shopping or pop out
