How do I stop myself yanking on the reins during a bronc session?

I have a hunting breastplate. If I feel a bronc coming on I can loop a thumb under where it attaches to the front of my saddle, gives a 2 fold effect, keeps me deep in my seat and also helps me keep my reins to prevent her dropping her head too low..without overly pulling her in the mouth.

With a neck strap I find it slides down the neck and or I had to lean too far forward to grab it, knocking me off balance (chunky necked coblet). With the "monkey"(balance?) strap in between the d rings my hands are nowhere near that when the broncing happens, so never utilised it.

Umm actually surely you should be trying to keep the horse's head right up during a bronc session?! to stop them getting their heads between their knees! That is how you stop them learning to Bronc! Just keep the head right up...

yes, exactly. imho you WANT to pull their head up, broncing is NOT fun (says she, still recuperating 7 months after being dropped) and they shouldn't do it with a rider on. pull head up, ride forward with soft hands. horse learns that bronc = pain, not bronc = fine.

Ditto! Baaa ...

Broncing should be nipped in the bud!
