We got a new puppy at the begining of December, she is collie X Suluki Greyhound X whippet and absolutely gorgeous. It did take us about three weeks though to stop her crying overnight, we followed the vets advice, kept her in a crate next to our other dog (a relaxed 3yr old beagle), gave her plenty of toys, and ignored her cries - it was tough going but we got through. Anyway she has now started the habit of waking up about 5 - 5.30am every morning and starts yapping. Once we get up she doesn't immediately need the toilet she just wants attention. So we have tried, staying up later, really trying to tier her out in the evening, ignoring her completely until we get up at 6.30am etc - nothing is working. this has been going on for about 6 weeks now.
I love her to bits but she is driving me nuts!! We get up with them at 6.30am every morning and they are fed and walked in the same routine every day. Where are we going wrong - I just need her to sleep an extra hour!
Any help or advice gratefully recieved - p.s. we have had other puppies before but never had this problem - normally we've ignored it a few nights and then they have learnt, this puppy is persistent if nothing else!

It might be the birds or the sunrise waking her up, if she doesn't need the loo and has no other reason for her early rising?? Perhaps try playing a radio quietly overnight to disguise the noise and making sure her crate is covered to darken her sleep area?

Cayla will offer some proper advice but I saw that mix of breeds and said Oh My God - you are very brave taking that on

As above, cover the crate so she cannot see the break of light.....and u will have to persivere and ignore her, she is getting u into a routine

of waking up and coming to see to her.

I would let her cry for longer till she settles again and make her crate pitch black.

We had a similar problem with our latest whippet pup ... in his case we decided he was waking because he was hungry and so started feeding him a small gravy bone snack just before he went into his crate for the night (the dogs each have their own covered crate, but all are side by side ... takes up a full wall of the bedroom lol) ... anyway, it did the trick with him so might be worth your giving it a try

We tried a blanket over the crate last night and though she wasn't silent she was definately quieter this morning! I will try again tonight.... Thanks for all the advice!
