How do I tell the owner there's no grass?

Large bales around here are £40!!

Hay at the moment in this area is absolutely hells teeth! The farmers aren't letting you have more than 10/15 bales at a time. They don't want people stocking up for winter yet. Were you offered the 150 bales recently? I'm amazed. A few weeks ago (I had a mare on box rest so was getting through a lot of hay) I had a job to get ANYONE to sell me ANY hay!!!
 
How long have you shared ? Is the owner ever up there when you are ?

I have a sharer and tbh if she couldn't tell me about welfare/care concerns I wouldn't want her as a sharer.

You need to talk to her, arrange to meet her at the yard and say you're concerned about the condition of her horses. Explain and show her why.

Quartering the field sounds a sensible thing to do tbh if the grass is anything like it is here, something will need to be done to try and save some for winter.
 
Wow, £15! £45 here in Kent, if you can find any. Speedgate Farm are selling old hay in small bales at £5.25 per bale. So £150 a month, if only spent on hay, would still only provide 30 bales, one a day between two horses... I guess if they have no grass a round bale would last about a week and a half, based on what mine ate in the snow. So you're looking at 2.5 ish round bales a month. I'm guessing the owner is short of cash, so maybe she needs to find some new fields.
 
Hi guys,

Just an update. We talked to the owner and we researched were we could buy more hay in bulk. She then turned round after my mum had gone to a lot of trouble ringing round that she could not afford it. Later that week i had a phone call from a friend saying that she had seen the horses i share on a website advertising them for share! We confronted her and we are leaving. My last ride on these fabulous horses is this Thursday. I shall be very sorry to go, but we cannot have a share like this when no one will commit.

Sad for you and your mum, but hopefully this will end up being the best thing for the horses. At least you got the owner to face the realities of caring for them.
Hope you find some lovely, well cared for horses to ride soon.
