Say I wanted to become a FB or an open breeds class judge. Is there a pathway of training and assessments? Do classes associated with specific breeds or types need judges to do training with the breed society? Asking for purely theoretical reasons, don't worry I don't plan to become a judge anytime soon.

First approach should be to the breed or type society i.e CHAPS for coloured horses/ponies, NPS for Native ponies (exmoor dartmoor etc). BSHA for Cobs, Hacks, RH

Most of them run workshops out of season to appoint new judges.

Seeing the standard of judging at local agricultural shows recently, the only credentials needed was to be a friend of a friend ?

My friend is a judge and he's a breeder and shows the breed himself so he must know what to look for. I think that's how many of them started out before courses were a thing.
