I've just put mine up for sale due to moving abroad and various circumstances. I feel horrid. He's lovely and sure he will find a lovely home, but i feel like I'm losing a family member. :(

Having bred one to be my next horse of a lifetime, and found that she probably won't fulfill that, I won't be selling her. The market at the moment and the stories I hear mean that I'd rather loan her out for life and always stay in touch, than lose control of her destiny.

Interestingly, the one I bought, who I much prefer as a 'person' I could probably more easily sell. I feel a responsibility to the one I bred, which I don't so much to the bought one.

It's heartbreaking... My oh owns a stud and sells all of the time, I just can't get involved... I've had to put my first born homebred up for sale for various reasons and she'll not be going anywhere until the perfect home is found. Unfortunatly I can't afford to loan her as need the money from her to keep others fed and to pay her mums vets bills, but if I could I would much prefer to do so...

I'll have my solicitor write up a contract to say I must have first refusal on her should new owners ever need to part with her, also I'll write in her passport all of my details saying if she is ever passed on without my knowledge to please get in touch...

I'm not the right person to be giving you an answer really because I couldn't part with one. After going to uni I put my gelding out on loan and thought it would be easy to just sell his companion but as soon as I got a phone call about her I realised I just couldn't- so 2 years on she's still with me. I think in your circumstances though it's different because it's a necessity and it's unfortunately something which you will have to do. Good luck with finding him a lovely new home.

The thought is worse than the reality I find. I sold a horse i adored, as he wasn't going to fulfil my ambition, and I hated it, but actually once I had put him up for sale, I just wanted him gone. He is the second horse I have sold, and I think because I am very aware they are a luxury and need to earn their keep, I am probably a bit hardened to it!
