The last post on 'New Stallions' got me thinking, how does evertbody choose their stallions??

Where do you find them......Locally/Nationally/Internationally????

Do you tend to go towards a certain pattern......Particular Stud's/Bloodlines/Own Stallion???

Do you go to Agents or Direct???

Licensing/Bundeschampionate/Pavo/BD/BSJA/BE Results???

And do you register British or Foreign and why??

Otto when he passes his grading !! he he

actually as its her first i want to wait and see what the foal comes out like first what she passes on and what the stallion does !! also as she is only little i need to stick to something like the Sandro Hit that will give me a bit of height but also have a huge problem as she already has great breeding so trying nto to cross them !!

Also with her foals im breeding them to sell so in Dressage it is what is 'IN' at the time isnt it !!! if i was breeding for myself it would be something completely different probably !!

I don't have any mares of my own, but I can answer on behalf of the breeders who chose my first-season stallion this year!

The vast majority had seen him at shows (including foreigners who saw him at international shows) and fallen in love! Arabs don't have 'gradings' as such, so the big in-hand shows are kind of the 'shop window' for breeders looking at stallions.

Those who hadn't seen him at shows would look at the stallions advertised in the Arab mags and websites, select those with the looks and pedigrees and show results they liked, and then go visit a short-list.

(I am so proud that every breeder who came to see him chose him - often over much more established, proven sires!)

So - with Arabs it's a combination of shows, show results, pedigrees, advertising and viewing. Nowadays with AI everyone is looking at stallions internationally as well as nationally - so as a stallion owner one is competing against the best in the world, not just the best in one's own country or region!

Where do you find them......Locally/Nationally/Internationally????

Internationally and Nationally. I look both here and in Germany for the right stallion

Do you tend to go towards a certain pattern......Particular Stud's/Bloodlines/Own Stallion???
There are certain bloodlines I do like so will consider stallions from that line. However it's more what suits my mares. I dont stick to one stud, although have to sya if I have a good experience with a stud and get a nice foal from the cross I will often reuse that stallion, or consider their other stallions. For example I have used Goshka Stud's stallions, I have bred to two different stallions belongign to Folly on here, I have used Bluewood Stud stallions and bought broodmares through them, and I will probably go back to Klosterhof Medingen as there service has been excellent and they ahve a superb roster of stallions

Do you go to Agents or Direct???
Direct

Licensing/Bundeschampionate/Pavo/BD/BSJA/BE Results???
Well I keep an eye on all of these, but no one on its one influences me.

And do you register British or Foreign and why??
I register them either with SHB or the TBF, and one this year with BHHS

i personally like to use british bred but i did go for one in europe, through worldclass stallion, just depends on what i want to breed, i like my showjumpers

We have our own stallions and depending on what we are looking for we would look in the UK and abroad.

We look at our own mares and try and find a stallion we think will compliment them. We wont go on a crowded bus just because the stallion has won the Bundeschampionat or the PAVO cup (to me that is the easy option

, although I can see why people do that), and will select our stallions looking at their own performance, stock to date (if any), bloodlines, if they compliment the mare etc.

I would tend to go direct to the stud, which is ok if you are confident enough doing this.

Up until this year our stock were registered through the UK, the only difference if those mares I imported in foal, as I registered the foals with the Studbook of origin, i.e. Hano Verband or KWPN.

Mmm - well most of my mares go to my own stallion - but next year I have to find stallions for 3 of his daughters, two of whom are in foal to a stallion who stood with me this year but has now gone home.

It's proving damn difficult. He has to be RID, he can't have Touch of the Blues/Grey Macha bloodlines, he has to be available by chilled semen, he HAS to have at LEAST 9.75 inches of bone AND a nice head and preferably not be grey (they're all grey and I'm over-run with greys.) He has to have as near to perfect conformation as possible, be very 'typey' - and ideally have performance record. Hens' teeth might be easier!

What are you trying to breed from your mare? Eventer, SJ, Show Horse?, .....once you establish what you want, then the next steps are much easier...
