How do you cope with no school and constantly windy rainy days?

I am fed up with it all and have no inclination to ride or get the lorry out!

Usually I try and hire a school once a week and have 2 lessons a month (which involves a lorry ride out) I try and hack the other days and he has 3 days off a week due to work committments (I work 4 days on and 5 off). In summer I can ride in my field and go for lovely long hacks.

How do you all cope in winter?

Grit my teeth and pray for spring. Im at the stage in life now where as long as they go out in the field during the day I dont stress too much about actual work.

I cannot begin to comprehend how people on yards who have no winter turnout must be feeling though.

I very often have a break in the winter for all the above mentioned reasons! this year i have got the use of a school so have carried on, roll on the spring!

Like a miserable bad tempered bear! Roll on spring, I seem to spend all spring and summer getting mine in lovely condition, just to watch it all fall off over winter. Bah humbug.

Turn him away for the winter bar a few turns around the block if it is nice, just to remind him he still has a purpose!!! He is out 24/7 though so work not needed to keep him sane

I manage as best I can to get out hacking in between the crap weather and my work commitments and try not to let myself feel guilty for wimping out from time to time!!!

It's not wimping out - after all we put up with all the winter hard work cos riding is meant to be fun!!
And it ain't fun in the wind and rain so I don't do it!

I am really struggling

Have two horses and full time job, moved yards two weeks ago - new yard assured me arena was being built in January, but having spoken to other liveries, seems YO is full of promises but slow to deliver on everything. I have two small turm out strips one of which is under water so really have to limit turn out. They had to stay in today. Old horse is happy in stable munching hay, hacked youngster out early, could only go down lane and back as barely light. Boxed to local arena one night. Its a chore rather than a pleasure though and really p**ssed off, as major upheaval to move yards, cant face the thought of moving again, but also cant face thought of two more months of winter trying to keep two horses sane with limited turn out and no school. What to do?

Sorry , just realised I hijacked your post....

We turn out during the day and only ride if it is safe to go on the roads as have no arena/school and the field they are not in is for spring.

Ride when I can and because the field is on a good slope they stay in reasonable shape.

At the present time I am desperately trying to save my grazing from being bogged up by spring. In reality it needs another month's rest, but as it's my only winter grazing I am just very finnky when I turn out.

To get round it I often take her for long walks inhand, or if it's gale force just a walk to the nearest safe verge for some inhand grazing for 1/2 an hour, then back to the yard for some TLC seems to keep her happy. The rest of the time it's hacking out.

Ditto!!!I dont worry about it at this time of year.i normally give him 12 weeks off threw the winter, however looking at the crap we are due to get may be longer, lol!!!We dont compete seriously so as long as i can start to fitten him toward end of feb for the summer i wont lose any sleep!!!

Give mine a holiday for Nov and Dec and then do what I can to get her fit for the Event season starting March.

Luckily, being a sure-footed cob she can cope with being lunged on crap ground so this is what I do 2 nights a week in the dark, and then hire schools and box to permit-hacking at the weekends.

It drives me mad and I feel overwhelmed with the amount of work I can't do when I need to [to get a properly fit].

I've got enough days leave left to take a half day off every week from now until the clocks change so have booked Wednesday mornings off so I can box out somewhere again for fast work.
