Bed down that is!
Talking about rubber matting on other post and someone mentioned bedding down all the way to the door

i have never done this with mine- am i really mean!
I was just always taught to brush it back to leave space for the waterbucket- we had to do it for p/c inspections and stuff i am sure!
So- what do you do!

well i dont have rubber matting, but i only fill about 3/4 of the stable-like you said to leave room for water bucket etc, although mum likes to completely bed all the stable-her choice!(more mucking out!)

Yeah- thats the way i have always done it!
I was worried there was some big secret that i missed!
I do think it looks smarter brushed back- but i am sure the horse would prefer it all the way!! i am just mean!

ahhh were both mean then!i think it looks smarter too, mind you when i come in the morning zak will have spread it all over so its coming out the door

yes i leave bare by the door otherwise it would be all over the yard.how many bales of straw do you use for a new bed in a 12 by 12 stable?

well we have big bales of straw at the yard, but for a new bed about 3 'slices' which is quite alot!(probably nearly a whole normal sized bale!)but we only pay a set amount for it, so i use as much as i can to get my moneys worth

Well i will soon find out! i havnt got a horse at the mo but am looking to loan.
When i had my horses before they were all on shavings and it was in with the livery so i nver really noticed how much i used!
I would be interested to know how many bales a week you all use though as my parents are keen for me to have all costing written down! the livery offers straw for £1 per bale!

I use mats but only put shavings at the back of the stable. It is 16ft sq and 1 horse and 3 ponies use it as a field shelter, although i clean the top every day and once a week remove the wet stuff, and top up with a new bale every week.

i put 5/6 normal bales in to start then prob 1 a week to top up.
Tizzy-don`t write it all down,it`s way tooooo scarey

Yeah i know- its to kepp my parents happy! god- 5/6 bales really! i am sure that when i worked at the riding stables we only used 1 bale- maybe they were big bales!
Its been an awfully long times since i have used straw though!
The farmer wouldnt have it on the yard as it was hard to get rid of apparently!

Another quick question please- if feeding hay ad-lib in the evenings only! for a 15-16hh how much should i budget for?

One of my horse books suggests that because horses spend a lot of time standing looking over their door, that to have their front feet on bare concrete and their hind feet raised on the bedding, could be bad for them.

I actually use rubber matting with just a pee-patch of bedding these days, but when I had horses on livery yards where they swept the bed back I bought a rubber mat for the door area.

depends how much the hay is-its 2.50 a bale at my yard and he got (per night) about 2/3 slabs so we used about 2/3 bales a week which cost 5/6 pounds.

thats a good idea-a mat at the door.one of my stableshas a very worn area in the concrete by the door caused by 1 particular horse,he was my alarm clock.lol bang bang bang 7.30 every morning.

no 1 pound a week for straw after you have put the bed down.so 5pound for 1st week.once its down it just needs topping up.

I bed the whole stable down, hang water buckets on the wall, but have a rubber mat in the door way so just brush the door way back a little to stop it creeping out onto the yard as he stands behind a chain rather than the door shut. (internal stables)

So generaly do you do a full muck out on straw less than you would on shavings- i always did a full muck out once a week on shavings and used 2 bags/bales. Ohhh its all so long ago!

I have rubber mats, but I still have a full straw bed right to the door. He spends a lot of time looking over the door, so it makes sense to have bedding there. He's really clean so I hadly use any bedding each week.

usually leave the banks in place and do poo and wee bits every day of course then once a week dig wee bits out and top up with new straw.every body do diff and all pons diff2.had 1 that danced in secret every night and trashed the bed .also had some that do tidy poopile and look like they hardly moved all night.

i've always left the front of the stable without any bedding, so its 3/4 full. that is at work and college. i have never put my pony in a stable so havent done it with him.
