As per the title really, How do you feed hay when stabled?

I'd prefer not to use a net but really don't want hay all over the bed by morning. Plus I have a box walker, so she'd just spread it all over if it's on the floor, unless at the back but then it'd be mixed with straw bedding!
Any tip/advice??

my physio (horse!) told me that haynets are responsible for more neck injuries and problems than anything else due to the snatching action horses use plus the unnatural position when they eat. Agree feeding from floor can be messy but a haybar can be a good solution - try a home made one as the real thing is pretty expensive. My dad knocked one up for me out of some plywood and rubber matting!

double netted. she wouldnt have any hay left 10 minutes later if i left it on the floor!

My old TB is a box walker, i do feed him from a net. Basically because he doesnt like where my Haybar is situated in his stable, whenever ive fed him solely out of the Haybar it seems to make his Box walking worse.

But ive found a place in his stable where he seems to like eating. If have the The haynet fixing on the wall right next to his door & he loves eating his Haylage there, it's really calmed his box walking habit down as he can eat & still watch all the yard over his door.

My others are fed from Haynets & the Haybar 3/4's in the haynet & 1/4 in the Haybar.

Interesting... My mare is still out at the moment but soon, as there is only one left now she will have to come in. We have haylage at the yard and it is harder (I think) to get out of the net. And I do see my mare snatching quite violently when she is eating from it. So I may put it on the floor (but I want to make sure she has enough for the night and she will need soooo much!)... Ah, what to do!

I really don't no what to do!!!!! I have used smalled holed haynets for years as my pony is greedy but having read quite a few posts saying how bad haynets are, i feel I should feed it from the floor, but if i was to do that his hay would not last him long at all... cant feed him more as the he will get fat

haybar, I got mine fairly cheaply off ebay. George is a real scoffer and used to have his hay in small hole nets, but I didn't like them and I have been really suprised to discover that he doesn't eat his hay any faster now it is in the haybar.

My filly has a haybar, all others have it on the floor and only 1 has a haynet as he has to have wet hay and can turn his box into a bog in 2 secs flat.

I feed from the floor. ABSOLUTELY hate nets, not only for the asymmetrical muscle development, but they are also a hazard, seen too many legs get caught up!

I have a fatty so I do weigh his hay during summer to control weigh. Also I soak his hay, I know roughly how much he eats when he's in so he gets enough to last him till I go back in the afternoon, very little waste, its just a case of knowing how much they eat. Also if its soaked then I don't need to worry about weight gain.

He gets half on the floor and half in the haybar, this way he always eats with his head down (COPD case) plus he eats the bit on the floor first and the haybar later so nothing gets trampled into the bed...

from the floor. My little chap is far too lazy to persevere with a haynet so would rather eat the straw on the floor!! Not great for COPD so gets a pile of haylage instead!! Luckily quite tidy and not a box walker so I can get away with it.

hay off the floor, he's on rubber matting so no a full bed so his hay goes straight on the matting in an empty corner. He's pretty good about keeping it there.

small holed net at front of stable so she can still see whats going on outside and she is a box walker - well until she came to new yard anyway..been soo clean..i've tried feeding it on the floor but she just trashes it into bed and she's on matting too but with usuall-ish bed...one of my pet hates is hay in shavings bed!!LOL
I'd love to have a haybar though when money's better think I may invest in making one - as I much prefer the horses to eat more naturally so to speak

Off the floor, for the ones that are messy I have a big tub, cut off the bottom of a gaint water/ oil drum (obviously cleaned) that the hay in placed into.
All gone by the morning.
I prefer haynets as I fill them on Sunday and just carry a net into the stable rather than carrying loose hay about as the wind always catches. I've started putting in the wheelbarrow to carry, saves all the seeds from being blown about and then i tip it into the muck heap.

Milly has a haylege net, Myrtle normally has it on the floor but she is very tidy and doesn't trample it into her bed like Milly!

We feed all but one of ours from the ground. The other one is fed hay in a small holed massive haynet to slow him down.
