How do you feel about others riding your horse?

I ask because at the moment working 8-5, I haven't got much hope of riding in the week - so my friend (Scruff on here) rides Murphy at will. She doesnt need to tell me or ask me and Im not in the slightest concerned about where she takes him or what she does with him as she's a better rider than me and he's a good horse not to mention I trust them both totally- so no problem in my eyes.

My friends and family all raise eyebrows as if to say they wouldnt let anyone do that.

So what do you guys think?

I think it depends on the level of trust you have in your friends capabilities and how well they get on with and know my horse.
At the moment mine is having to be ridden by someone else, she is perfectly capable of riding him well but she lets me know when and where she is riding. I am happy with this situation.
However when he used to go to my friends for the winter when I didn't have time to ride she used to do what she wanted with him. She is an extremely good rider and knows him almost as well as I do. She would always let me know how he was and how he was going, but it was up to her what she did and when.

I would prefer someone else rode my horse in my presence, just for my piece of mind! A couple of people have ridden him now and I havent a problem with it, but I do like to see whats going on!!

I reckon if, as you say welsh, that the person is a better rider than you are then its brilliant, if not, then it can be anywhere from a bit irritating to downright maddening!

If I kow the person and trust them then I have no problem I wouldnt let just anyone on either of our boys.
I have a couple of freinds who I let ride to help out, other than that no one else rides them.

Depends if I think they are 'any good' or not or, what the horse is doing. i.e my cob can be ridden by any experienced rider - she's a baby so I wouldn't let a novice on her. But my WB is a pain in the butt and I only let people who are able to make her work properly sit on her. That's mostly just my trainer. I've spent a fortune in schooling and lessons and don't want her thinking she can get away with messing about.

If I'm struggling for time (normally this time of year) then I'm quite happy for my friend to ride my horse.

She is the only one though that I would allow to ride my horse without me being there and that's mainly because I bought my horse off of her!

I think in most peoples book you would have to know the person very well and they would have to be an exceptional rider, have an A+ understanding of horses and alot of experience.

I don't have a problem with others riding my horse - after all I would only ask someone I trusted to do so.

A friend sat on Thumper over the Christams hols, and jumped him the school. Wow, it was fantastic - he's got such a pop in him and he made mincemeat of them. I'm not terribly brave over a fence, so it was great to see someone far more competent than me jumping my lovely lad.

Yep, I'm with this thought. I would love someone else to ride my horse as I'd love to see how he goes with someone on board (obviously, I can't see this when I'm on him). However, I have asked quite a few people at the yard (including 2 professional riders) and no one will get on him!!! He's very sharp but not dangerous and he's brilliant now. I guess I will just have to get someone to video us instead!!!

My best mate shares Baron with me. I admit I like to know what shes been doing with him, however she is sensible and so I dont ever worry. She knows both his and her limits and when he needs to wear boots etc.

Only one other girl on the yard is allowed to ride baron in my absence, I give her access to my tack occasionally if she is bringing him in for me or if I am busy, I trust her toatally with my horse and she loves him, and she is only 15 but IMO one of the most sensible riders on the yard and she works him very well as he can be very difficult to get him working correctly if you are not used to big horses.

I think it can be good for the horse to have a chance of rider now and again, but I do pick the riders carefully

Well for safetys sake and that of my horse it would have to be someone I was happy with that had a reasonable level of riding ability and was used to something sharp. I would never let anyone ride my horse if I did not know what they were about and capable of because that would be silly anyway! Like letting someone drive your car off that you do not know too well!

my only problem is that whenever someone else rides George he goes much better!! He goes all soft and round - I think I'm too soft with him to be honest! I would only ever let my instructor ride him outside the school though, don't really know why as he 's a poppet.

Having a broken collar bone (thanks to my bay donkey!) a few selective people have been riding Monty for me. Sounds a bit snobby saying selective

but my instructor especially has worked hard to get him how he is now.

It has been really nice as I have been able to see what he goes like rather than just feel how he's going

although it makes me wanna ride more than ever now

Thanks so much Bellaboo and S for exercising the beastie

Only my instructors will ride mine.
There is somebody on the yard who expresses a wish to ride him but I would have to ride him first to assess his mood. He's a one woman horse and isn't keen when other people get on him first but is ok if I have ridden him first.

I used to say that I was fine with it, but now I am not so sure. I have certain people who I trust to work him properly, and I feel safe letting them ride unsupervised. I have had a few folk ride him for me in the past, but after seeing them ride I know I will not be letting them back on him as he was different after - and not in a good way!

He is special though in that he will put up with a novice/beginner and be a total saint, but if someone who knows what they are doing rides him they can get decent work out of him, adn some decent cheekiness - and I am now worried that might get ruined if I let just anyone on him. I just feel so bad saying NO!

I am totally okay with it, as long as they know Chloe, and I make can make the rules. The kiddies at the yard are queueing to hack Chloe! Infact I'd rather a 'gung ho' little person rode Chloe rather than an unconfident adult.
