I have the big flexi tubs, but I can't lift them! It is pointless me even using the wheelbarrow, yet it helps get it from tap to stable but then I can't lift it out of wheelbarrow! Any ingenious ideaS?

Yes, you want one of those wheelbarrow water carriers. They are like a camping water carrier. Made of tough plastic with a pouring spout. Fill it in the barrow and push barrow to trug and pour.

Bear with me...

I fill 2 flexitubs up as full as I can carry (about 1/3) and carry them to the stable, then pour one into the other. I then go back with the empty flexitub and a normal bucket, fill them both up (flexitub only as full as I can carry) carry them to the stable and pour the bucket into the tub. I then use the bucket to fill the tubs up to the top (could use 2 buckets at this stage).

Fortunately the tap is very close to the stable as this is all a right palaver but I'm just not very strong!

Is this for in the stable or the field? I am amazed by how many people fill a flexitrug FULL of water everyday for their stable and then have to drag it out three quarters full to empty it in the morning and then proceed to fill it full again. I know that some horses drink different amounts but my big girl only has a third of her trug full and while I can see she has had a drink she doesn't ever drink it all. Even the giant hunter next door only has one normal sized bucket which he doesn't finish.

If this is for field use then ignore me :) and go with AA's suggestion of a H20 to go wheelbarrow thingy.

That's what they are called !! I bought one last year to push water over to the calves, never used it in the end and until this thread started, forgot I had it. Wonder where I put it, I am sure it would be useful if I could find it !

I've recently bought an H2Go bag and they are brilliant. The only thing I can recommend doing, if you get one, is making sure that the hole is hanging slightly over the end of the barrow before you fill it up. If you don't, the water starts pouring and takes the dirt in the wheel barrow with it. I learnt this one the hard way!

stable - fill and drag

field - you can get the really big bottles of water (with handle) for about 50p or something in tesco. I stocked up a few winters back and use them. They are espeicially handy for when pipes freeze - I filled them up at home and took em to the yard :)

Thanks everyone :) yes now that the bucket is in the stable I think I will leave it there and just top up and scrub when necessary.

I didn't think of dragging it, may try that ;) and thanks for the suggestion of the carriers :)

I thought possibly of using a watering can to top up with?

*wonders if AA has also misplaced and forgotten about the amazing horse that she bought recently and if I could manage to steal her from under her nose* :D

what I do with the tubs and the big plastic buckets is clip a
lead rope to them and drag them along much easier

I'm a fill and drag girl in the stables but have used an H2Go for longer journeys to the field and whatnot. Can't remember why I don't use it more around the stable.

Are we talking about the tank on legs with a funny coloured tail ? or my baby orangatang ?

Definitely the tank on legs (Martha?) Hubba Hubba :). I have a tank on legs already and tell myself that if I got another one I would have to go for something different so that I could do different things but I can't help drooling over the tanks. Yours is an absolute beaut. I would have to hunt if she was stood in my paddock :)

That is very kind of you. She has been a little tricky, had her 3 months now, dreadful harvest mites, fixed now, scabby knee's/hocks improved but not good. Needs rhino housing and combination locks to keep her in stable, she can figure out how to open anything ! Schooling coming along but canter left is still missing. Cubbing put on hold because she just is not balanced enough and I don't want to break her.

Plus points - kind, genuine, willing, smart to look at as long as she is clipped every other day !, fab in traffic and as bombproof as a horse can reasonably be expected to be aged 6......and my confidence is flooding back.

I've got one of those wheelbarrow type round trugs on wheels (it's huge) - i bought it in Oz, and it's still going strong. He has this as his water bucket, blocked from rolling off with a brick - I can either fill the whole thing in one go, or just top it up with normal buckets. Wouldn't be without it now.

I think you can get them easily in the UK now ?

Kal drinks like a flipping hippo . . . and he's still in (wretched mud fever/wounds on his pasterns) so needs a very large water bucket. I fill it half full while in the wheelbarrow - wheel that over and put it in his stable and then fill another bucket (also wheelbarrow) to top it up.

I used water carriers but as they kept cracking and are quite expensive (never seem to find free ones when I need them!) I now just use plastic bottles like stargirl88. Because I have an automatic drinker now (yay) I just use normal 2 litre bottles as I only need it for feed dampening and if I am giving her a mane wash I take a couple spare to rinse her off with! I can't stand all that dragging and heaving water, much prefer little and often! If I take 4 litres of water twice a day it is practically no effort compared to lugging ten litres!
