I've recently set up a livery yard in Kent, near Canterbury and am wondering how people search for a new yard. Is it by word of mouth, particular websites, adverts in tack shops...?

My issue is that I've only recently moved back to Kent, and as such am a bit out of the loop with the local horse network. We've got a nice website, and offer DIY to Full livery and have great facilities (big school, great hacking etc). Our prices are reasonable, and it's a small, quiet yard. If I was looking for livery it would be ideal, so I'm just wondering where's best to advertise?

Any pointers appreciated!

Visit your local feed stores and tack shops and put posters up

If I was looking for livery I might ask at a feed merchant, the assistants are usually clued up on local stuff and happy to give advice

I've been on three yards - two were found through word of mouth recommendations and one was found from an advert in either a tack shop or a local free horse publication.

i drive round - word of mouth :)

although have to say its getting more convenient to advertise online (for free) so i suggest doing that :)

The tack room frolics forum has a livery section in the classifieds or the speedgate Facebook page might be useful for you (although they may be more west Kent focused).

Also you could advertise in the Pegasus equestrian magazine?

Having moved around a lot due to my husbands job, I have found yards various ways. The one I'm at now, I found by asking around friends (who knew a friend), another by asking the local riding club committee, another by looking in the local tack shop. I did look at some websites but the yards were too expensive. If I were you, advertise in the local tack shops and maybe in the local RC or PC newsletters.

Advertise in the following:

Local tackshops
Local equestrian publications (we have Chiltern rider, you may have similar)
See if you have a regional facebook page
Ask for local riding clubs / pony clubs to send around group emails and advertise on their website/newsletter - consider offering to sponsor a show class, or offer you facilities to hire for clinics

Get chummy with local equine professionals - farriers, physio's, vets and spread the word

I found my current yard via an online forum.

Word of mouth is always good as are sites like gumtree/preloved/equine adverts.

My yard has a facebook page which is also good as you can post unlimited photo's etc.

A web site also helps I think - many people prefer to be able to find out as much about a yard as they possibly can before making a direct enquiry so a good website is important especially if you can ensure it's listed on google.

Facebook pages and online, only word of mouth through forums (as I only know a couple of horse people) if I was struggling to find anywhere via those methods - it makes sense to advertise where new horse owners will see :-)
