How do you get around this loan dilemma?

Were moving to our own private yard over easter weekend (excited beyond belief!) Which due to better hacking and our own school will enable me to get a sharer for my mare.

we will be keeping all our tack (mine and the friend moving with the) in a lockable container with alarm on site.

My issue is, I don't feel comfortable giving access to the container to a complete stranger!! Its not just my stuff they could potentially clear out but my friends too!

Is it cheeky for me to say ' you can only ride my horse when I'm there to open the container'?

Does anyone else have this dilemma and how do you get round it?

Surely if you TRUST someone to ride your horse would you not trust them to have access to the container?

( BTW , thats not meant to sound bitchy )

That in a way defies the point of having a sharer if you're going to have to be there every time she wants to ride??

The first few times they come up you should probably be there anyway and if you get a signed contract with their personal details they'd have to be pretty crazy to steal stuff with you knowing who they are.
Any reasonable person would understand the security issue so just be open about it once you get to know them it would all be fine anyway. Just change the code every once in a while (or if you suddenly stop hearing from them).

I dont see that thats a problem at the beginning. As you build a more trusting relationship then re-evaluate the situation.
Only other option I can see is that you allow the sharer to collect the tack from you and drop it off when she's done, eliminating any need to enter said container? but might be a bit too much faff?

That is a tough one. If it's a sharer I guess they'll have set days? Is there somewhere you could leave the tack/grooming kit on those days until you've built up trust in them to give them a key?

That's very logical showpony, but after the thread about awful loans its made me think.

How can you really trust somone at first? But unless you give them a chance you never will I suppose!

I think I would want a period of time before trusting them completely with either horse or tack. Is it possible to put a lockable cupboard in there ?. It would save any problems if your friends stuff was in there.

Best of luck with the move

Thanks for all the replies.
I think I'm going to get references first.
Then allow supervised use of tack and horse
Then once I'm comfortable with the person they can have a key.
Will also sort a contract out too!

I got stuff out of a container like that when I was sharing a horse. It wasn't kept in there permanently, the owner just left it there on my days and I think quite often she picked it up later on as well. I suppose that way its pretty clear who's taken it although pretty unfortunate for the sharer if it is just routine thieves! How secure is this container? I would only keep my saddle in the house really, it cost too much and a container like that is an obvious target for thieves anyway. Other stuff I'm not so worried about. Your friend can always take her tack home the first couple of times. Eliminates the chance of a naughty sharer having a go on the friends horse too, heaven forbid... You should vet as thoroughly as possible to be able to trust the person but we can all get the wool pulled over our eyes sometimes.

Very sensible post. The container will become a target (as they often do), and an arrangements as above sounds very sensible.

Tack is covered by insurance as its got a 5 point locking system or whatever its called. Its also alarmed and has cctv covering the door, although camera is on the house next door so its not perfectly clear but helpful none the less.

Yes but my point is that if you're worried about sharer stealing your tack, someone suggested getting contents insurance to put your mind at ease.
If you give your sharer a key to the container and she steals your tack I can't imagine the insurer will be very sympathetic.

No, I can't imagine they would be!
Which is why I'm wondering how other people have got around this.
Safe to say sharer won't be getting a key until I feel I can trust them.

We recently took on sharing a pony and on the first day were given access to the padlocked tack room, stables and every pony/rug/feed bin etc. However, we are known to the owner via Pony Club, our home address and own stable yard is known locally and I'm sure the PC DC and others would have given informal references (private chats and gossip LOL) before the offer was made to have the share of the pony.

I would be wary of complete strangers or 'new friends' having access to my tack, but wouldn't leave it overnight at an unattended yard anyway.

The point of having a sharer is to make things easier.
Having to be their defeats the object!

Could you get a small separate locker just for tack on the days sharer rides?
