My coloured cob has a disgusting tail! After washing it at the weekend the top half is quite white now but the bottom half is stained yellow/brown. Ideas to get it whiter?
Washing powder. Just make sure you only do the ends of the tail & not to get it on his coat/skin or if you do, rinse super thoroughly with cold water.
Non bio is the best. No promises it will work on yours but it has done on a friends in the past.
Ah, you're in the hands of an expert - owner of a grey mare with a floor length tail!
1. Hot water and blue shampoo (they're all much of a muchness) Rub it in and let it go to work while you wash the rest of the horse.
2. Rinse out and then use some whitener crystals from Designer Browbands - not sure what they're called but are bright blue and in a tiny pot. You only need a pinch of crystals in a jug of cold water. Dunk tail and hold it in the water for 30 secs or so.
3. If the weather is likely to be wet, rinse out, otherwise leave the tail to dry and then spray liberally with coat gloss.
4. I put the tail in a big plait and put a tail bag on - you can get ones that velcro into the plait from Tailgator (they've got an ebay shop.
5. If you can get the horse used to wearing a tail bag even when ridden, leave it on until the very last moment before going into the ring - if you don't like wavy tails, give it a good brush as you take the plait out.
Sanity restored and a pretty white tail!

Is the "Blue Shampoo" the stuff that old ladies use when they have a purple rinse? I used to use that and it got my white tail perfect! And it worked wonders for an iron grey coat too!! I can't find it anywhere now though
Very dilute purple spray in a spray bottle, wet the tail spray on and leave for 2 mins max, then wash off with normal shampoo, dont use to often but works wonders is cheep and quick and no harmful chemicals
Take a bucket of very very hot water. Put in 2 tablespoons of equine blue - get from equineblue.com. Then put tail in but only to just below dock. Stand for as long as you can - 10 minutes at least.
Don't worry about the blue tail that comes out.
Tresume deep cleansing shampoo mixed with more equine blue - wash tail twice.
That should get the yellow out. Whatever you do avoid bleach and harsh products - you end up with a dried out orange tail that has to be cut.
Daz can be used on the tail up to the dock if really desperate - but don't use it that often.
When washing I just add a little equine blue to your shampoo - far cheaper than the ready done shampoo for grey horses. You can also add it to the conditioner. If you use to much it easily can be reduced by washing the tail normally. It is also excellent for bringing up black coats really black. My skewbald also gets a bit in the final rinse water to really have his white bits dazzling and his bay bits are lovely and dark.
Long term - invest in a tailbag from tailgator. My gypsy cob has it on all winter at all times and in summer he has two thirds of his tail bagged and the top third out for swishing - he has a floor length very thick tail. The bag folds up so is out of the way when riding.
Coat the tail in survivor detangler which you can get from tailgator before plaiting - makes it very easy to comb through, keeps it is super condition and helps to have the dirt slide off.
Next time do as I did, get a coloured cob with a black tail, forelock and two thirds of the mane black - so much easier
I used to use blue soap flakes - you used to be able to get them in a packet from Tescos - and washing powder (just make sure it doesn't touch his dock coz some horses are sensitive to it).
Ok my method considering I hate the feel of any leave in conditioner and my TBX has the tail any traditional would be proud of!
Firstly in cold water wet tail and wash in cheap washing up liquid, the white hair only rub in Ace Bleach, leave in while you wash fromt of horse and legs then wash out and shampoo again, rinse in hot water if possible then condition with any human condition, I brush his tail while the conditioner is in then rinse out in warm water.
