How do you get your whites whiter than whites ;)

Just wondering if anyone has any budget blowing ideas to get your greys White! My piebald is a very messy boy and I going to a show on Sunday and some of the stains just won't budge! I don't want to go out and spend ££££'s on horse whitener products that just don't work! And he needs to look his best :D.

I use hibiscrub on my horses legs and blaze. If it is good enough and strong enough to thoroughly clean wounds with,then its good enough to get stains out. Make sure you give the legs a good scrub with the hibiscrub and use warm water for best effect. Leave the hibiscrub on for five mins and then rinse off.

Good idea!

For my pony's yellowish tail i stray vanish pre wash spray into the length (not dock) and leave for 5 minutes then shampoo it glistens amazingly after and always gets commented on, but I wouldn't use it on the coat/skin.
 
Warm water, fairy liquid and Carr & Day & Martin Stain removing shampoo (http://www.robinsonsequestrian.com/...ions/gallop-stain-removing-shampoo-500ml.html)
Dandy/water brush, and a hell of a lot of elbow grease!

And white chalk! Apply, leave for 5 minutes, rub in and then brush. Just be careful what brush you use on the black bits after, otherwise you can end up with bit white streaks everywhere. From experience, this causes minor panic ten minutes before you go into your class :p
 
Several buckets of hot soapy water, clothes I don't mind getting drenched in, turn on the radio and prance about and scrub like hell!

This. Love having a grey when he's clean . . . but it irritates the heck out of me when he's grubby. I've tried all sorts of expensive lotions and potions and have found that nothing beats fairy liquid, hot water, a water brush and lots of elbow grease.

My girl is a right grubby thing, but head and shoulders really gets her blinding white! A nice bucket of warm water, with a squirt of shampoo in, then I sponge it over and brush her with a water brush while she is soapy and wet still, before rinsing well. Smells lovely too, and as she is a sensitive thing I get the one for sensitive scalps so she is happy too! Day to day I sponge off any stable stains and give her a good groom every couple of days - preventing the build up of them really seems to help me have a chance in hell of getting her white again!

I would go easy with hibiscrub or any other harsh cleaners. Although it will get wounds clean, it is mega harsh and very drying, so you would want to go carefully with it, esp if you have a horse you know can sometimes be sensitive to things. I don't even use it on wounds tbh, just salt water!
 
i read somewhere on here that a tiny amount of purple spray in your water counteracts the yellow!
after all, whitening shampoos are usually purple :-)

A few drops of blue food colouring works the same and is cheaper! :) Do a spot test first though.

There's also the shampoos aimed at grey haired folks. One comes in a silver/purple bottle and really works to brighten whites. Plus, it smells quite nice too.
 
I use steredent tablets on his tail. Soak 6 in hot water and hold tail in water 10 minutes. Cheaper denture tablets dont work nearly as well.
 
My OH pinches my hair shampoo (Fructos for long hair) for his coloured and he always looks lovely....smells nice too! (Horse that is lol)
 
When showing my traditional cob to get his white socks & v thick feathers white I wash them with a mixture of washing up liquid/vanish/supreme blue shampoo/non-bio gel equal parts of each + a small amount of conditioner mixed in. (do a small test patch just in case). wash it out really really well. then i let dry, then put chalk on them & apply stable bandages on for over night. next day i take the bandages off and brush the excess chalk out & bandage again whilst we travel to the show.

+ I only do this for shows, the rest of the time a bit of wahl tea tree shampoo.
