iv never sold/given a dag away before and im not sure how to go about it, how do you know how to attract the right sort of person? how can you be sure they are going to the perfect home?
do new owners prefere not to keep in contact after they have taken the dog?

please tell me your stories good or bad, and any advice you can give me.

we havent decided wether or not she will go but it is an option.

thanks x

Dont put "free to good home" whatever you do, might fall lucky but chances are high you will get people who only want it because its free.
Word of mouth would be a good option or if you have a pure bred breed rescue.

You don't say what breed she is but a breed rescue might be the best place. Charging money for a dog won't necessarily guarantee a good home..........there's lots of rich baddies out there! If you can't find a breed rescue then put up some posters in the vets and ads in the paper but do lots of checking, insist on getting land line numbers not just mobiles and seeing the house and garden in the same way a rescue centre would. Draw up a proper contract stating that you have the right to check up on the dog at will and that she is not to be rehomed without your knowledge. We had to rehome a dog years ago and regretted it after a few months so tried to contact the new owners but they had moved away and couldn't be traced. We found out 18 months later that they had emigrated and sent the dog to a pound.

There are a lot of horror stories out there but I agree that you should not advertise, “free to a good home”, word of mouth is the best way, failing that then I agree that you should consider the breed rescue service. You could leave an advert in all of you’re local veterinary surgeries but always insist on inspecting the prospective new owners property, people who are genuinely interested in taking on the dog won’t mind in the least having their home inspected for suitability.

Good idear but I wouldnt include the "can check at will" part.
Be honest, would YOU want your dogs old owners turning up whenever they feel like it?
Most people would be happy to send pics at xmas though.

we have a rescue dog ( a collie cross lab) who had 5 homes in five months and was only five months old when we got her. the lady we got her from was rehoming her because her old dog didnt take to her. we send photos at chrismas and her little boys birthday and sometimes she comes to see her (she lives five mins away) i would advise you do a homecheck, and ask to have the first refusal of the dog if they decide they cant cope with it

Word of mouth is definatley the best way. I have been given both of my dogs from friends of friends. A Weimaraner and a collie X lab both had to find new homes quickly for various reasons and their previous owners were so pleased that the dogs werent going to end up with complete strangers. Both of them are really settled with us now and you would never know that we did not have them from puppies.
Ask everyone you know, a Farrier is a great person to ask he sees loads of animal lovers everyday, give him a poster and a photo and ask him to put it in the window of his van thats how we got our second dog. He will also know what the people are like and how well their other animals are looked after.
Good luck.....

We have just had to do this, we tried for about 2 months to find a home for her by word of mouth but couldn't as alot of people seem to think that if your rehoming a dog, there must be something really wrong with it. We had a border terrier and contacted the border terrier welfare trust who had 2-3 homes waiting for 1. He found a home for her within a couple of days and she went yesterday, she has gone to somebody who had been waiting for 12 months, so although we are very sad, she has gone to a good home which was checked out by the charity and they have promised to let us know how she had settled in etc.

i would feel a bit rude turning up out of the blue. its such a hard descion to make, i will defo do the contract suggestion, i didnt even think of that.
i feel so guilty!

I think the idea of putting 'visit at will' in the contract is so that people will always wonder if you might! You could stipulate that it means one or two visits a year with a phone call first. Can I ask why you have to rehome the dog?

i had a baby about a year after we got her and now baby is bigger shes not very patient with her and im worried one day she will go for her if she pulls her hair to much one day or something.
i moved back home to save up to buy a house. mum has a german shep, and they are fighting all the time, it started off when we fed them so now we feed them seperatly, now its if you stroke the shep my dog starts fighting because she so jealous.

its really putting pressure on the house hold and being 6 of us plus the 2 dogs its getting very uncomfotable.

i wanted someone to take her off us untill we moved out, but i have not found anyone they would want to have her for 2 years of so... so this is another option we have opened,

I REHOME RESCUE DOGS, AND I HAVE CONTRACTS DRAWN UP TO STATE THAT THE DOG MUST BE RETURNED TO ME IF THE OWNER CAN NO LONGER KEEP THE DOG, AND I ALWAYS PUT MY MOBILE NUMBER ON THE I.D CHIP DOCUMENTS SO IF THE DOG GETS OUT, AND THE OWNER CAN NOT BE CONTACTED !!I CAN BE CONTACTED AND THE DOG WILL BE RETURNED TO ME "leaving the owners to explain to me why the dog was out in the first place" I ALSO CARRY OUT A HOME CHECK TO MAKE SURE GARDEN IS SECURE AND OF ADEQUATE SIZE FOR THE DOG IN QUESTION.
!!!!MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO MAKE SURE YOUR DOG IS NEUTERED B4 U LET IT GO, SO U CAN BE USE IT WILL NOT BE USED AS A BREEDING MACHINE FOR MONEY GREEDY DOG BREEDERS!!!!
