I'd probably either a) have him do the horse on sunday then don't book another appt or b) ring him and say you've got swine flu will reschedule when feeling better
I'm shocked you would leave it till the day before to cancel. TBH I think your farrier would have every right to be pee'd off by the lack of notice to cancel the appointment (especially a weekend one).

I agree with that. You'd better phone him up asap and tell him the truth.
If you haven't got the guts to phone him and tell him the truth, then can you text or email him. Something like "I'm sorry but can I cancel my shoeing appointment for Sunday, as I have decided to use a different farrier. I am extremely sorry for the short notice and would like to thank you for your help in the past".
Could you say that your horse's shoes were loose, and there was another farrier on the yard who could fit you in, and he did them as you wanted to ride? Something like that?
Why is changing farriers such a nightmare? Agree with maybe should have given more notice but that's another issue.
I moved yards recently and decided to take the opportunity to change farriers. Farrier 1 was the yard farrier at the old yard.
So I thought moving would be a good opportunity, I hadn't left him specifically I'd left the yard.
However the yard manager decided to tell farrier 1 I was moving where I was going and who was now shoeing my horse with the result that farrier 1 approached farrier 2 along the lines of " i hear you're shoeing one of MY horses".
Calm down dears, he is shoeing a few at my yard tomorrow, he will just be glad to get home half an hour earlier!
The trouble is I am a terminally truthful person, and I just didn't feel his shoeing suited my horse as much as the previous farrier's did. Well, I know it didn't, as horse started falling over!! So I am inclined just to say that, rather than make something up. I have stuck with him a good while but am still in touch with old farrier as he's sound and we are in a team chase team so I've had chance to chat to him about coming back to do mine and he's been fine about it. So I could just say the latter bit. Gah farrier doesn't even care probably!!!
My old farrier always had to be chased to turn up and never told me when he was coming (I'd just turn up and find that the shoe fairy had visited). I got sick of this, so just stopped chasing him and used the other 1 who visits my yard regularly. He is reliable and communicates with me!
I told the truth thanks Donklet! He took it badly and so I'm glad I told the truth as he clearly just takes it badly and I would have felt awful if I'd fibbed!
